Why do these hair particles seem "thick" in comparison to this tutorial?

I’m trying to learn Blender’s hair particles by following a video tutorial. The tutorial uses an older version of Blender (I’m using 2.8). When adding particles with the Add tool, the tutorial adds particles that look like this:

When I try to do the exact same action in 2.8 – using the same settings (as far as I can tell) – I get this:

There’s obviously a lot more hair particles to control in my version. I would like to limit the number of hair particles to make it more like the tutorial – it would make combing much easier. I assume I’m missing some setting which would keep the hair particles more sparse, but I’ve been unable to figure out what that setting is.

Any ideas?

Have you checked the child or child visibility settings?

In the tool settings, increase radius and steps.

When you’re placing the hairs, are you clicking and dragging? Or are you clicking individually for each hair? Because you should be doing the latter. The add hair brush will just spit them out if you click and drag.

Doh! That was it.

The tutorial video was a sped up time-lapse video, so it was difficult to see that the presenter was clicking individually for each hair, not clicking and dragging. Now that you brought that up, I watched the video again and that’s what’s going on :flushed::slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for the suggestion!
