The solidify method is not good here for two major reasons:

  1. You’re quadrupling your polygon count, which means your armature will run at 1/4 performance, which means your animation preview will likely be very slow.
  2. You have no control over the lines- or, as you say, “looks bad”. Hair outlines require a lot of artistic control to remove lines that don’t add to the volume you want.

Instead, I would recommend using Grease Pencil line art- it’s also slow, but you will at least have artistic control. And, the slowness isn’t constant, like it is with Solidify- you can bake the animation to your line art and then you’ll get no slowdown
