Ken Perlin’s patent of Simplex Noise has expired in January of last year, and it’s said to be superior to original Perlin Noise. So will it ever be implemented into Blender?
Just a curious question, I’m totally fine with how Perlin Noise works.
In my opinion, Simplex Noise (right) just looks uglier and less organic than Perlin Noise (left):
I think when there is a patent on something then open source developer just avoid it like the plaque… and expireing something is just a too juristical complex theme to get involved in…
…anyway: people used the non-patented thing for years… so they also aren’t used to use it
… on the other hand there is also OpenSimplex , OpenSimplex2S, OpenSimplex2F… and what else other noises… so maybe the discussion about this topic is just too noisy for the devs…
