Would you render at lower res but higher sample and then AI Upscale or actual res but lower sample?

Both using OpenImageDenoise.
Objective being I tried low sample rate but OpenImageDenoise but the end video just looks like running smugs.

You can’t add detail where there is none. Even AI upscaling is at best an approximation. Higher res, lower samples every time.

Higher res, lower sample and downscale to final resolution. If you wanna deliver FullHD, render 2560x1440 or 4K, low samples, denoise on, them downscale to 1920x1080 px.
