X Mirror Does Not Work

I’m following along with a blender tutorial and my X mirror isn’t working. For this to work correctly there needs to be an exact X-mirrored counterpart through a symmetry along the local X axis, as said here. http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Modeling/Meshes/Editing/Basics/Mirror

I have snapped to symmetry, symmetrized and made sure the X mirror option is checked. What part am I missing to let editing work symmetrically on both sides of the x axis?

Your object is not symmetrical, see the position of the object origin, it’s not on the centre line of the object

Position the 3d cursor at the world centre (Shift+S / cursor to Center) then move the origin to that location with the Set Origin options in the toolshelf (object mode)

This worked! Thank’s so much Richard.
