What a beautiful render. Great modeling. Rather unusual to have knotty pine on the floor. Floorboards are generally hardwood. Looks great. I wouldn’t be surprised to find this in the gallery.
Before someone moves it there, you might want to put some saucers under the plant pots, or put them in colorful cachepots. Water pooling under a clay pot is not a good thing on wooden floors, or any other kind of floor, for that matter.
Thanks for the comments guys! It was (and still is) an interesting learning experience.
@LtOBrien: the wood texture is form arroway’s free collection (great collection btw). You can get it here: http://www.arroway.de/textures/en/index.html
Look into the “wood” volume, but if you can download them all!
@Meschoyez: this scene was rendered in Yaf(a)ray, the new code, which is like yafray but on steroids! It sure helps out a lot achieveing nicer results. You should give the new version a try info here, builds for both win/linux: http://www.yafray.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1159
@hbarone: the new yafray comes with 3 render methods. 1. Direct lighting (which you can combine with AO). 2. Photon mapping (with final gathering). 3. Path Tracing (with a path/photon combination). Each of them uses different render-quality settings, but it is usually defined more by the Anti Aliasing samples you set. For this scene I used direct lighting+AO and good render quality settings (probably not best). The other 2 render presets have a bug that produce fireflies on glossy surfaces.
here’s a shot with the render stamp and the settings I used (previous version): http://files.wildspad.com/afecelis/niel/wip/boveda_11a.jpg
heheh, great idea Orinoco! Didn’t see your post as I was replying to the others.
I was about to work on that, since that’s how plants work in real life. I think it shall be an interesting detail to add
ps. Orinoco is one of our major geographic regions here in Colombia.
Anything to do with it? Or just sounds catchy? like putumayo (also from our amazonian region)
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions guys!
I’m working on them right now and I hope to upload the new version today. @reaper: the light color tip is great, but some others have suggested to turn them off since the sunlight coming through the windows should be more than enough. What do you think?
Personally, I like them on. It adds some visual flair to the image and the room does not look to be artificially lit by the lights. As one would expect, the room appears to be lit by the outside lights. Perhaps the splash on the ceiling is a bit too defined though. Do you know how to make that a little softer? Maybe you can reduce the distance on the light?
sure Meschoyez! Give it a try! If there’s anything I can help you out with just let me know.
Thanks Cub, I’m glad people are noticing the new yafaray
Here’s a new version. Changes:
-Added bases under the plants’ pots. Checked out one of the ones I got on my terrace for my palms. It’s a simple wooden structure with 4 wheels that allow you to easily move the heavy plant Underneath it you can place the bowls to collect the dripping water (and they’re there, but the camera angle won’t show them).
-Made the tone of the lights more yellowish.
-Made the glass table thinner and its legs thicker.
-Added a rug, but I’m not sure about its design. It’s quite hard to find an appropriate one that would go with the style of the room.
-Added a tiny bit more of bump to the floor to see if the imitation look goes away.
-Added a zine on the table, but it doesn’t grab much attention.
Pending: working on the fireplace, and other suggestions. Thanks to everyone for the help and motivation.
Very nice overall, one thing that is a little jarring though is that whilst it is clearly an overcast day outside, you have quite sharp shadows that indicate a clear sunny day on the inside (especially noticeable on the balcony). I’d suggest either making the shadows a bit softer, or changing the BG to a brighter day. Otherwise I really can’t fault it!
Ben
Thanks ben, I agree with your observation, but I still don’t know if there’s a way to “blur” the raylights a bit. I’ll try to dig into this matter a bit more…or go with a brighter BG
wow reaper! thanks for the detailed observations. You got a very sharp eye. That line in the cylinder is only showing up in Yafaray. With the tests I ran in Indigo and Kerkythea the line didn’t appear. That line coincides with the division I got there for the fireplace. I’ll re-check my normals and smooth there.
Thanks for the head rest observation, now I get what you mean by a more “cushy” look ;). Corbusier’s original chair is like that, very cylindrical and edgy, but since we got this tool to play around with I’ll try your tip out
Still thinking what to do with that rug, heheheh
