Well, I’ve decided to participate in my first challenge. We’ll see how it goes. I’m going to start over on an old project. I’m hoping to have better results… and actually finish it of course I’ll be starting from scratch, but this will be the midpoint goal.
Several reasons I’m starting over. The main ones being: Its against the rules to use it since its an older project =P. Under that beautifully thick beard, he’s screwed up as hell… not to mention, I think I sculpted the mh head… which is also against the rules. Anywho, off to the races! More to Come
Hi SpindleRift. Its A cool idea! I really like your old character beard. If desaturate it and put some randon color on it… gonna be awesome! I must study blender hair, I know how difficult hair is, And I think it will be a pain in the ass to do on my model.
Thanks marcellmota, hair is hit or miss for me. This had a good result, but it was a ton of trial and error. I still don’t really understand most of the settings.
well, I finished the mouth, and realized that my loops between the nose and mouth are all buggered up. I think I’ll devote the next couple hours to remodeling the nose.
alright. I think I’m pretty pleased with the new topology. Unless someone thinks it’s broken, I think I’ll likely start sculpting next. I slapped a quick projection mapped texture on there just to see how it is shapping up. Turns out the poor guy actually looks a little like me =P (texture is temporary).
I think this should be all the relevant settings for the beard/hair. If I remember right, the main thing was to have B-Spline, strand render, and adaptive render off in your visualization tab. give it some transparency, makes the hair seem finer, and the texture is just for some color varience. Hope it helps.
Good topology, but there are some issues with the overall proportions. Mainly the brow being very large and the ears set too far back. I took the liberty of doing a bit of a paint over for you, hope it gives you some useful ideas.
Thanks for the help Ben. I’ve known there was something up with the ears, I was just having a hard time figuring out what it is. I made the ears a little bigger before I read your post. I’ll move them up a little and flatten the back of the head as you’ve suggested, but I’m going to take some license with the brow though:) Other revisions since last update include skin shader. I like where it’s getting, but I need to re UV since the sculpt and paint an actual texture. I’m still using the projection painting. Anyway, would love your comments and suggestions.
Here is the latest update. I’ve started on my skin texture and goofed around with eyebrows and lashes. Completely open to comments and suggestions at this point, so let her rip.

more hair and some tweeks to the mesh n texture… I’ve been having different ideas about who this guy should be, so I may be changing the title of the thread.
