1980 Cadillac

hello, today i modeled the inside of the left front door:

Still got a list of things to do: proper seats, seatbelts, textures for leather, wood, cloth, inside of back door, inner mirror, sun shields
radio labels, climate control labels, left dashboard switch labels, door switch labels, and body labels and logos and a proper ignition lock. Sounds crazy but i like it complete (will omit engine bay and trunk and bottom of car, passenger interior is enough for me)
Fortunately i could get all from a collection of great reference photos about that era cadillacs. I always re-compare what looks good and whats still off.
Thats my reference http://www.mcsmk8.com/cadillacs/mycads.htm (look for cadillac fleetwood broughams from 1980 to 1992). Really great collection, the largest i found about that topic.

its been a while since my last update, here some shots of the passenger interior, to show what all has been modeled inside (front part of interior) With the interior model i am quite satisfied now, with materials and lighting not… will experiment with textures here as well…
How do you like the interior ?

here i have a version with a wood and a leather texture (supposed to look like leather… created by myself…)

Render time: 16 minutes 27 seconds, 300 samples, on a GTX 580

Your attention to detail is very impressive, scorpion81! It is great to see how dedicated you are to creating such a realistic replica of the car.

I cannot decide if I prefer the leather smooth or with the bump, as they both have their advantages. I think if you choose to go with the bump mapping, perhaps it should be more subtle on the seats, as it makes the leather look almost like a rigid plastic with the bump in your last image. Or you may even choose to retain the bump texture on some parts, and remove it on others.

Either way, incredible work!

@James Candy

Thank you for the kind words ! I really appreciate this, because it keeps me motivated :slight_smile: . I scaled the uv on the seats, so the leather structure looks a bit finer there. Furthermore i got rid of the bright color at the bottom of the passenger room, an invisible emitting cube was intersecting the model there, a leftover. Only thing that looks odd now is the black border at the side window, it has thickness and a glass shader, maybe it should not become thinner to the border (i think i subsurfed it there incorrectly)

so, fixed that black border at the left window, now it really looks decent in my opinion.

finally… added the cadillac emblem :slight_smile:

some exterior closeups from the front and back of the car, showing the emblem at its positions…

I hope i dont bore you with renders of this non-supercar, but its a nice classic one in my opinion… If you have further suggestions how to improve the renders or the model or have some critiques, please post them. For example, what could be an appropriate background (picture, or a modeled scene ? Something with the 80s maybe, hmm… Some minor details in the renders might still miss and here and there is some dent in the mesh, but wouldnt you think too that this looks great now already ? I am quite satisfied now with the result… As i said, this is my first car, but not the first attempt, and i have invested quite an amount of time to make it look as realistic as possible, mainly model-wise i have to admit.

i have made another hdr attempt, but somehow the exterior render looks off (too bright maybe…) what do you think ?
And at the interior one, i noticed too late that the glass shader / ior / subsurf of the mesh is off, so the image is distorted at the window borders. Hmm…

Hey, time for another render, i made an attempt with a dawn like scene. Just experimenting with the lighting and looking for cool shots / camera angles and later i will try to composite this a bit (have not used the compositor in my renders before)

I must say that it is refreshing to see such a nicely modeled interior. So many car models here…so few detailed interiors. Your night scene would definitely benefit from some glow on the taillights.

The exterior render is very nice. Maybe if you use the contrast/brightness node you can tweak the car, the car looks a bit too vibrant for that scene.

Thank you guys for your kind words ! I have tweaked the model a bit and set the background strength to 1.0 now, was 2.0 before for the daytime renders and 0.03 for nighttime. Also i disabled ambient occlusion on the exterior render to make the car color a bit darker.
And i added a simple fog glow to the night scene with the compositor. But i couldnt get the window glass correctly, the according shader needs to be tweaked still.

I think the car looks great in the HDRI scenes! It’s also good to see the emblems on now, it seemed naked without them.

You car paint material looks great. In my experience, finding the “perfect” settings is just a matter of taste. Some people like more of a reflective paint, some prefer more of a matte.

Also, trying out different HDRI maps can be helpful. Some provide more realistic lighting than others, due to differing dynamic ranges.

@James Candy
thank you for the feedback ! yeah, i think i made a good paint for this car, with the help of the according blendercookie tutorial (“rendering a sportscar”, well thats not exactly a sportscar… but for me its a real beauty!)
As i am no expert in a certain discipline of 3D creation, i have been playing around with almost everything (besides tracking yet) and try to improve my skills. Although i think this car has a relatively simple shape to reproduce. So it possibly cant compare with the sportscars around here or even other categories of models, like organic models or sculpts, where you have to be a real pro to master it, and i have seen some of those artworks here at BA, really great efforts !

hmm, i cannot decide what from what perspective this car looks best… still a render with the same hdri, but gonna try different ones too soon. this time with 500 samples, in 1 m 47 s, not bad for a GTX 580 i assume :slight_smile: (with 512x256 tiles. although… the background area is rather large too, hmm)

My model is not 100% finished yet, things like proper seats, inner mirror and seatbelts and wipers and some smaller interior things still miss… and i dont have a final “plan” yet on how the scene should look like, i just go on and on and dont know whether i ever can post this in the finished section… there is always something to tweak.

I’d think about adding a cool, maybe custom license plate. She looks great outdoors

I love Cadillacs…I own one myself (not this model though). This is a very nice model. Beautiful work. Congrats.

@harleynut97
after some search i found a basic plate und customized it a bit :), see here:
i also changed the window glass shader a bit to be more reflective. And oops, seems i left
the lights on … :smiley:

@Mistro
Thank you for your kind words ! And what model of cadillac do you own, if i may ask ?

2005 SRX :d I Always dreamed of having an early model like you are making though. You can steer with one finger. And I seen people do some really cool customizations too. Maybe one day…

Plate looks good, but if your going for realism (which I know you are :slight_smile: ) I would make the scorpian text with less depth than what you have. I would also maybe add a couple of bolts to mount the plate I had to do something similar on my casino project. I did it Photoshop.

Its looking good, Scorpian keep going with it. Have you thought about grunging it up a little … maybe some tire and rim dust?
