Hi guys!! I’ve been working on this piece for a whiiiile. Had multiple iterations, couple failures, but finally landed on something I’m really happy with. Only about an hour from where I live begins the Appalachian mountains. The Appalachians are one of the longest mountain ranges in the world at 2,000 miles. I found inspiration for this location by dropping down on em’ in google earth. Hopefully this summer that process will change and I’ll be visiting these locations IRL to get reference, but for now google earth is honestly so amazing for it. When I landed in this field I knew I had to make it immediately! 3 weekish later I have this.
Technically speaking it was a giant feat for me! Learned so much about efficient ways to scatter all my natural assets with Geometry Nodes. Geonodes has honestly already completely changed the way I’ll approach my future work. It’s so flexible and optimized. I also used SpeedTree for the first time! Feels amazing to be self reliant on custom tree making now, no more relying on premade stuff. SpeedTree is super super fast, very fun to work with. I’m only at the tip of the iceberg with it though. Gaea for terrain as usual, of course, amazing software. Graswald for foliage, of course, amazing. Everything was composited in Blender this time around actually, which was interesting. Slow compositing interface after a lot of stuff was added, but node based is amazing. I think I’ll be getting Nuke soon… looks to be incredibly fast and node based like blender. Lastly I rendered this animation overnight, took about 6-7 hours I think… at 4k 128 samples. Thanks for taking a look and have a good one!
