This came up in a recent thread by @Modron : Sky Pics and @J mentioned I should post the query up here.
I did a quick search, but didn’t see anything, other than a thread asking where to post assets (a couple years ago, and serendipitous enough, also by Modron )
Is there a way we could have a section, perhaps as a subsection of the Tutorials Tips & Tricks category, where users could share completely free assets for other members of the BA community to use? This could be used not just for pics, like in the referenced topic, but node groups or whatever else the community at large is willing to share for free. Not sure if having sub-sub-sections for organization would be best, or just use tagging for organization would be the best route to go, but I imagine tagging would be easiest on the maintenance side.
Hmm… if blendswap.com would not have this problems about certificates (or something else now a 504 gateway timeout )… but then there maybe has to be some “review” about any copyleft/-right something ??? And there is also for example sketchfab.com …
Good idea! Maybe a hybrid forum section would work. All posts with attached files or a tag indicating a link to free asset(s) would be automatically placed there; and a user could create a post in that forum section themselves if they specifically want to just share something.
But I don’t think replies can be tagged, so that would not work for asset links in replies. Although perhaps that could be resolved if hashtags in replies are processed. A popup when a link is detected in a post suggesting to use the free asset hashtag would help to inform people of the functionality.
See ?? Special work for the admins/moderators… maybe it’s just simpler to tag a post with free asset and also adding this to the title…? If anybody wants to contribute…
Yes, that could work. There is an “assets” tag. I just tried searching with it, which will bring you to page listing all threads with that tag. Again, I don’t believe replies can be tagged, though. And the little sample I did of the posts tagged with the “assets” tag indicates that many do not include attached files or links to assets. Some of the workload that comes with trying to correct that could be alleviated by auto-removing the tag from posts that do not contain a link or attached file.
Just click again…
…oh and nice idea…
…and in the coding area ther is released Scripts and Themes… so maybe more an are to tell about it ?? But hosted somewhere else (again juristical problems ??)…
i was kinda hoping for here, not yet another site to reference, but i wasn’t taking in account storage space for the server either; with pics, that could get rather large (though the 5mb limit would help with that) … mebbe users would link to external for higher res/sized items, having just the smaller asset/downscaled (<5mb) here?
I personally think it could make sense to rename Tutorials, Tips and Tricks to “tutorials and resources”- no functional changes whatsoever, just a slight naming tweak
and then each type of asset in it’s own topic? so, if i wanted to add more sky pics to Modron’s collection, i would respond to their thread (which would already be tagged), but if i went to add, say, my rock shader setup, i would put it in a new topic “Material Shaders: Rocks” with appropriate tagging … is that how you’re seeing it @J ?
Sometimes people don’t seem to bother in the slightest way about space they don’t pay for… for example using 3000x2000 images to show a problem where most of the space isn’t used to show anything or not using JPG… (i try to make mine <100k and mostly even 40k is enough)… or posting uncompressed (by blender !!) blend files with dozen of things which aren’t even relevant for to problem…
…not even speaking of copyright infringements…
…but i could rant about this for hours…
Anyway… putting this into context while in a disscusion is one thing… posting this in a special area might get the site into problems like @bartv mentioned… it’s about accountability… ( as juristic term)…
I’m going to (correctly this time… lol) mark this as solved, since there’s not an easy way to tackle the accountability issue without putting further burdon on staff. thank you all for your input, and hopefully this topic will shed light for future readers.
