Blender Battles February Entry

Tell me what you think, be very critical, I want to win, so tell me anything that would make it better, I know that the engines on wing and back-end aren’t at all textured and the ship needs more detail, but can you see I am going for a Drag Racer type of thing? I hope to add some decals, tell me where I can find those. The shape and everything took a lot of work so I hope it is at all good.

Feedback people!

[Edited by Sago - Unconstructive post 'cause I wasn’t aware I was in Focused Critique]

I can see it’s a Drag Racer (type of thing), it’s clearly made for speed.
But the blocky textures, I don’t like. Just don’t try to over do it. Just look at, let’s say, Formula 1 cars for inspiration on how to texture it.

And don’t forget to put it in a nice scene, I know I will with my entry.

Good luck,
Sago

a) The wings look a bit disjointed- its hard to tell, but I think there may be some sharper bends in there instead of a smooth curve like you want

b) the wings should be thicker

c) how does the fuel get to the engines? pipes needed.

d) strange artifact on the cockpit? or is that a reflection…

e) I’m now not really sure what those engine things are on the wings, there appears to be a giant engine in the body already (judging by exhaust pipes and booster shape on the back). Those wing things need a bit of work.

f) I like the body, especially the spoiler. I think the wings are letting you down. I think you could stick on some air inlets towards the front of the body, scrap the wings, maybe replace them with some concorde-style, with little squareish thrusters on the bottom. Another thing, those propellors in the wing-things (as they shall now be known) look bad. Sorry.

BTW you do know that you wouldn’t want exhaust pipes in space, and couldn’t use propellors, and wouldn’t need wings? :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry if that was a bit negative, when it comes down to it I do actually like your design, especially the body and spoiler (as I have said). Just trying to help you win :stuck_out_tongue:

No worries, it will not be the final texture, but the rivets are good huh? Also, it is made for both solid fuel rockets and fuel injected ramjet engines, inner and outer atmosphere travel. I already have a very good scene lined up. I’m thinking I will redo the wings. I appreciate the comments, I like it when people are get-to-the-point, it get’s things done.

Rivets? If you mean those kind of bolts I’d say no.

It would be okay on a different type of vehicle, but not on this one. A vehicle that’s made for speed, needs a smooth surface.

Speedmachines look better with something like stickers and/or airbrushed flames, speedlines and other stuff.
For example BackiZ’ hotrod:

Btw, BackiZ will also be competing in the Monthly Challenge, so know what you’re up against.

His work makes me fearful. :|, Also, when I didn’t have those bolts it looked like a toy. Advice on the Decals? Or flames? And, when I added pinstripes it went right under the cockpit and didn’t look right at all. Let me show you…(Post will be soon)

Okay, I decided to go with flames instead, how do you peoples like it? Doesn’t it look too much like a toy now though?
http://img154.imageshack.us/img154/76/febblenderbattles7my.jpg

The flames are too much stretched, but it still looks way better.

I don’t think it looks like a toy.
Also putting it in a scene and using the right cameralens and -position can prevent it will ever look like one.

Okay, well first of all I can’t get the flames any shorter, I can’t figure it out! And secondly I already have the scene lined up.And lastly, do you think I even have a chance?

Here’s all about applying textures:

About your flames, try adjusting the sizeX or sizeY on this baby:
http://download.blender.org/documentation/htmlI/PartM/textures/gfx/MaterialTextureTransform.png

Also just play with all the other Map Input settings.

And lastly, do you think I even have a chance?

Geez Jackjunior, what a question. You just started blending, if I’m not mistaking.
Most important is that your skills will grow rapidly while making this work (unless you don’t really listen to and act on constructive crits).
Forget winning, just make this baby a kick@ss vehicle. And next time your work will look even better.

I think if you fixed those wings you’ld have a much better chance of winning :stuck_out_tongue:

Just starting?! Foo, I been blending for a year. Yeah I tried the adjusting textures and everything, I thing I am going to haft to modify the image itself.

Edit: Jackj Stands for Jack John, not junior.

Took the advice and redid the wings, forewings, Paint job, and added intakes. How’s it look? http://img484.imageshack.us/img484/1867/febblenderbattles9vm.jpg

Much better. Now you need a good ligh rig Using AO on that. Or maybe yafray’s GI. And a good environement. This way you could get a good light color without 4~5 spot of specularity.

Don’t you think it should be contrastive in space? The shot will be in front of Earth.

  1. Love the flame texture
  2. Maybe you could make the glass transparent and model the interior?
  3. I don’t like the front wing things, can’t see what u7se it would be
  4. IMO, the flames would look cool if they were bump mapped as well
(might not, but It’s worth a try)

Overall, great work

I think it would look cool if you laid the first texture you had under the flames. Just to give it that panel look, and maybe some rivets. All under the flames of course, and is there a way to give the forward wings more of a canard look? Seep them back a little. Also the main wings could be a litte wider where they attach to the body it would give it more of a solid feel.

Ya know? Those are some good ideas, I’m gonna try that now. I’ll STFU and google what canard means too.

Looking good.

IMHO, I think you should just get rid of the wings alltogether, or make them very small. I think that would improve it a lot. I really like the front part, with the F1 style fin. The flames are a nice touch as well.

Thanks .:Tr@ceR:., about the wings, the point of them is because this ship is meant for traveling inside atmosphere also, so wings are necassary, I should have an update tomorrow, (I have way too much time on my hands)
