“There are two main goals for these contests: Fun and Glory.
Fun: You get only 4 days to create a cool image, based on the theme for the week.
Glory: After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared. The winner picks the theme for next week and will be featured in the Feature Row.”
I remembered seeing Cassini’s photos of Saturn and how atmospheric scattering made a blue fringe along the terminator between the light and dark sides, so I imagined one of this gas giant’s shepherd moons nestled amongst its rings, passing through the blue penumbra at the edge of the planet’s shadow, as it sees the blue sunset along the limb of the planet.
The scene itself is fairly simple: 2 spheres and a plane. Everything is procedurally shaded. I filled the gas giant with beige volume scatter and sure enough it has a blue fringe, and casts a blue-edged shadow. I added some variation to the gas giant to give it bands of different colours like Saturn, though it’s barely visible from this angle. The rings are a 1D smooth voronoi pattern using the distance from the planet. The moon is multiple layers of a crater-like voronoi pattern with displacement.
Hi Matthew! I’ve just started preparing the voting post for tonight.
Quick question regarding your entry: Can you share some details on how the two main characters were created? They might be 3d modeled but based on the edges and lighting these could also be 2d images. (A quick google search didn’t return fitting images, though.)
If this is an image plane, I’d suggest moving the entry into the open category. And if it is not, I’d be interested in how you created these even more.
