“There are two main goals for these contests: Fun and Glory.
Fun: You get only 4 days to create a cool image, based on the theme for the week.
Glory: After 2 days of voting, a winner is declared. The winner picks the theme for next week.”
Please remember to state if your entry is pure, open or non-competing.
For details please check out the: CHALLENGE RULES
Btw.: Comments are welcome in both threads (entries/voting). Have fun!
Shit man, I have a little ship that I sketched out ages ago that would be perfect for this. Maybe I’ll have some time on Monday to try and knock it out as quickly as possible.
Edit: Is using HopsCutter considered open even though all the functions are available within Blender itself? Just curious, as I know using DecalMachine would for sure be open, and I don’t use any of the Kitops inserts, HopsCutter would just be used for speed really.
We never really found a clever way to deal with add-ons (rule wise). Add-ons can save a lot of time (which is a valuable resource in this challenge). I think, add-ons that ship with blender can simply be ignored. However, external or even commercial ones should be treated like “another software”.
If this has an influence on the pure/open category depends on the impact the used tools had on the final result. As always it seems to be ok to just go with the below rules of thumb:
If you can honestly say to yourself, “Yes, I mainly used Blender to make this”, “Yes, nearly all of the foreground models are new”, “Yes, most of the models are new”, then the entry is Pure.
Yeah, it’s always that line. Then I guess I would go open since HopsCutter is a massive time saver. I’ll need it this weekend if I’m to even enter. One project deadline on Monday, whilst another requires a reshoot sometime over the weekend, with the potential for another random call out on Monday. Argh!!! I really want to enter this one with my little sketch! It’s on my todo list anyway, but this would be a nice way to just get it started and to flesh some of it out.
And regarding the category: There is nothing wrong with entering open entries. The last winner entered an open entry. It is a beautiful image, skillfully crafted and with an eye for colors and composition. No wonder so many votes were flowing that way.
Pure entry, 1000 samples. I’m almost happy with this: Need to spend some time messing with the car and the clouds. My solid body modeling could use some leveling up.
Pure Entry: The StarBug I called it the start bug due to the last image, I thought it looked like a beetle . Also I couldn’t decide which image I liked better so entered all my renders.
hope you enjoy
I understand, thank you. One more question if I may, would manipulating textures in Krita or Photoshop before using them in Blender make the entry be considered pure or open?
It depends. Usually, preparing or editing textures externally doesn’t really matter. However, taking a photo with a camera, editing some planes into the image in photoshop and mapping it on nothing but a 4 vertex plane in blender should probably be considered ‘open’.
As said above, in the end, it is the amount of non blender work that matters:
If you can honestly say to yourself, “Yes, I mainly used Blender to make this”, “Yes, nearly all of the foreground models are new”, “Yes, most of the models are new”, then the entry is Pure.
Cycles, 5000 samples, hdri lighting ($ poliigon), filmic, hull plating material ($), terrain generator ($), Khaos explosion generator, texture, border, signature Paintshop Pro, space craft modeling all new.
