It is the last point of the submission requirements. The deadline is September 15 ![]()
I believe the winners are revealed at September 30th, actually.
Thank you!
Should we consider how many CC0 models we use in our submissions? At some point would it start detracting from our chances at winning vs creating more from scratch?
Please keep the number of used assets reasonable - if your entire work consists of external assets, I don’t think that makes a good entry.
Sorry, this was the wrong answer - you’re allowed to remix as you see fix as long as you obey all relevant licenses.
Oh, that’s disappointing! If I was participating? I wouldn’t be anymore after that, an initially unstated, contrary to what was initially stated, and vague restriction announced over a week into the challenge.
Edited to add: fixed, thanks Bart!
Why are you linking to another contest?
Anyway, I didn’t say you cannot use external assets, just that if you mainly or ONLY other assets, then I personally don’t think that makes a great entry. But perhaps the other judges feel differently…
Sorry, this is incorrect.
Because what I posted there was clearly (I thought) relevant here, but if you’d rather:
I think you’ve stumbled into the local version of “Is Photography Art? ” TLDR / IANAL-TINLA: legally yes in most countries, ethically yes by general consensus – photos taken of what already exists, whether that’s an aspect of nature or manmade works, including artworks, can themselves be art because the photographer makes artistic choices on composition, lighting, etc that can make a photo more than just a visual copy of what already exists. By the same token, your renders of somebody else’s models are your art, not theirs (which doesn’t mean anybody should claim credit for modeling work they didn’t do, but that’s a different issue). Bringing this back to the [redacted] Challenge, the challenge is not about modeling! It’s . . .
Especially relevant here since what you’ve set up is (as ogbog notes above) essentially a remix challenge. That makes your “then I personally don’t think that makes a great entry” contrary to both the letter and the spirit of the challenge. If you feel that way, why did you set up a remix challenge? And why didn’t you make your “personal” feelings as one of the judges clear in the initial intent info?
Edited to add: fixed, thanks Bart!
You know what - you’re absolutely right and I’ll retract my post.
Appreciate it! ![]()
Thanks for the clarifications.
I think this topic will become increasingly hot with photoscanning, AI generated art, wide availability of good assets, etc.
I find it almost impossible to do a complex scene all from scratch. Imagine if you cannot even use existing textures or brushes or HDRI environment. That works for individual assets, but getting to a full composition this way requires years of previously made assets I think.
But remember, people were considering early-days photobashing as an insult, while it is perfectly accepted today. I feel like 3D itself as an art medium is only getting recognition now.
Actually, it all boils down to what is an artist and when you insufflate something personal into the piece, right?
I’d agree with @KickAir_8P here, modeling is only a part of the exercise. A very worthy part though!
Hey friends,
Just to make sure I am understanding this challenge.
We can create whatever we want that looks like the first splash screen we saw in our first blender version?
Cheers
Hey! It doesn’t need to be your first splash - you can pick anyone and be inspired by it. You can reimagine it, you don’t need to make an exact copy.
Added a new answer to the FAQ: I live in (country), am I eligible for the prizes?
I’m curious. What exactly do we have to make for the challenge. Thank you
You can read the challenge brief here:
Is there a requirement on the final licence of the scene on sketchfab?
I have contacted Graswald regarding the use of their free assets, they’re OK but they wonder if the assets will be downloadable from sketchfab (and I imagine they might not love that)
I feel a little guilty that I have not said anything about this challenge.
I think it is brilliant and I see many great wips already, well done everyone keep it up.
Unfortunately, although I would love to, it is totally impossible for me to attend the conference.
I had the idea of doing a non-contesting wip, but sadly will not have time either.
For what it is worth my idea was to do a version of the 2.46 splash screen of Big Buck Bunny with the butterfly. It was the first blender version I downloaded.
My idea was to totally change the characters (maybe to a cat and mouse) while retaining the expression on Bucks face and overall propotions, with the mouse worried of getting eaten!
Anyone can feel free to use the idea as I do not have time to get anything done.
Good luck to all!
It’s not a challenge requirement to make your entry downloadable. However, if you include any assets under a ‘ShareAlike’ type license, you’ll need to reshare your entry under a compatible open license too, which means making it downloadable.
Dang it!
So, I have an idea. I can’t travel so I’m not entering, but I’ve been “inspired”.
I look through the WiPs, seems like nobody’s doing the idea – I’m stuck, the idea won’t let me go, I’m gonna do it.
If I get this up on Sketchfab before the 15th I won’t tag it #bcon22challenge to avoid it being mistaken for an entry. But I’m thinking of doing a WiP topic. Any problem with me putting that in the challenge WiPs category given that I’m not actually entering?
Edited to add: while following (or trying to) on Sketchfab everybody with WiPs in the challenge catagory I found a non-competing WiP topic, so I’ve put mine up.
