City Sunset Loop

A still from the video

After getting the great PeopleGoingPlaces geometry node on Gumroad I’ve been experimenting with scenes that I previously would have considered impossible since I didn’t want to deal with background character animations.

There are certainly limitations to using this node, but I’m trying to push PeopleGoingPlaces as far as it goes!

Here is a scene inspired by the Manhattanhenge event that can be observed twice a year in New York when the sun shines straight down the crosstown streets at sunset time. It was modeled based on some random photos, but does not match any specific street in Manhattan.

Since the PeopleGoingPlaces models are not very detailed, I intentionally manipulated the lighting so that close-up the people move through deep shadows. The idea is really to just have an impression of lots of people moving about without ever being able to see individual details.

The cars and street signs are from the Traffiq humble bundle from a few years back.

As with other scenes before I am trying to create long endless loops out of animated scenes, and this loop segment is 24 seconds long (600 frames) with a soft crossfade in iMovie to stitch it into a endless loop - it’s not completely seamless, but close enough. The YouTube video runs for an hour.

This is so cool i didn’t even realize you could have that many people in a scene.

Great Job!

Thank you! It’s done with the PeopleGoingPlaces geometry node from here: https://ogjee.gumroad.com/l/kjvpp

It’s great for distant background crowds and I’m having a lot of fun with it.

Very neat, LOD (level of detail) is also a really smart trick for large scenes!

silhouetting the models is a smart trick, similar to what they did in CG films like jurassic park.
You used that very well here to create a very nice artistic composition.:+1:
(I also like the cars driving by)

I’ve done a similar project recently, also with PeopleGoingPlaces: Tropical Sunset Loop

That’s very pretty just checked out the tropical sunset, your very good with silhouettes and warm tones.

Thank you! For some reason I often work close to darkness in Blender. Many of those experiments are not worth publishing, but I’m fascinated by low sunlight and long shadows and all that.

Me too, I enjoy doing high contrast styles although many are experimental.
