daniel in the park

cross post with my sketchbook. but as this was quite a long project, i want share it here too. everything sculpted (or modeled (leaves)), no displacements, no textures. i wanted to see how far i could come with this way, when trying to put nature elements in too… i hope you enjoy

wow, only sculting? respect dude! but how high is your poly-count?

Echoing my post in the Sketchbook, this is very cool!! It’s almost like a sepia photograph with the tones that you have used. I recognise the flower as the Bird of Paradise Flower, very nicely modelled too  Note: I’m glad to see that you did not include the enormous Australian spider that was on the flower when I took a close look at one for the first time

amazing… simply amazing Doris! Nothing to add. Grats!

Great work as always from you, nice to see this boy is happy :]

A great job, doris, I’m glad to be among the first to congrat you. The face is really expressive, but I fear the front is too high or maybe the hair isn’t abundant enough in the forehead. The ear is well defined but a tad fallen perhaps. The wrinkles in the shirt are well outlined, however the vest looks too sketchy. The hand seems well proportioned but the phallanx corresponding to the fingerpoint looks of a different length in every finger. The leaves are well sculpted but they all seem very alike, changing the bend maybe a good idea. In some places the bark of the tree looks like scratched, possibly due to dyntopo limitations: you’ll find a way to solve it. I hope this tips help you to improve an excellent work.

Awesome work as usual doris. Truly a very talented and hard working person you are.

I always love the way you choose to compose your work. I do think his exposed ear looks off and could maybe use a second look.
Enjoying the color your bringing into some of the more recent pieces you have been doing.

seitekful, thank you… the leaves of course drive it, but there are subsurf modifiers, so polycount is around 3 million faces, less than 800 000 for the complete boy.
haha, matt, pity i did not knew that about the spider  glad you enjoyed, thanks!
thank you bernardo
3dlslider, thank you
frank, thank you so much! your observations are very helpful, and spot on… only, the ear is like in the reference foto i used, so i fear this boy gets a lot of teasing from his friends… yes, leaves, i made only 4 different ones, and used them to built the whole. should have made them more distinguish… thanks again for taking the time to point me good direction, i do appreciate very much.
ryeath, thank you… well, it does not feel like “work”, i enjoy every minute i can spend sculpting tremendously
thank you harleynut, yes ear, i explained, it is like this in real. yes experiment with low color settings to keep the sculpting aspect. glad you enjoy this explorations

wow, great job Doris! It’s a great piece.

Hi Doris,
you did a great work of sculpting, as your usual, he is well done and I like very much the idea as well as view and composition.

Though, I dont like the uniformity of skin and clothes materials (and flower) respect to the vegetation around. Such materials seem to me also a little too waxy.
I don’t like also his faceted jacket, maybe smooth shading could help here.
I concur in the sympathize with the boy for his ears and his sparse hair (he must be a real brat, btw)

A fine work anyway!
paolo

+1* for making a piece with the same name as me!

+1* for the fact that you used only sculpting and no displace maps!

+1* for being an awesome inspiration.

+1* for the plants!

+1* for the fact that this is awesome art.

Grand Total!

+5 *s. =)

doris, may I ask if it is multiple meshes for the different items, or just all one mesh for everything?

edit: oh, and 5 stars from me.

frobenius.edge (forum name sounds quite like you are a mathematician ;-)), thank you.
thank you paolo, for your honest words :-)… actually, yes, sometimes the same feeling aboout the combination waxy material and nature occured to me,i should start hopping over the shadow, and create textures etc,
thank you dan, about the name, as i chose it because i admire your spaceships, and when i started the project, the boy did not hold a flower, but a toy spaceship,so daniel seemed appropriate to me…
ryeath, thanks for the stars… yes many meshes: boys head is one, tshirt is one, shirt is three (2 arms and collar), vest is one, hand is one. flower is 3, trees and plants many because of leafes which are duplicates mostly.

I’m very glad to see Daniel on the feature top row!

Congrats!

paolo

Great stuff Doris. Great piece overall.
Congrats for being part of the new sculptcookie tutors crew!

Oh God, this is absolutely amazing Doris,
When will you start your lessons at sculpt_cookie site?

I love your Style, Mädel

Nice human form sculpture!
There is one thing that I wish you would have done differently though - sculpted the hair as part of the mesh to match the rest of the body.
Because the rest of it looks like a sculpture, perhaps in wax from the look of the shader. And when you see a bust in a museum or something it is all sculpted, they don’t implant doll-like hair into the sculpture.
The only exception would be a wax museum, but then in that case the clothing would be real clothing, eyes would be realistic, and so on. So when I see what looks like a solid sculpture with hair particles it feels to me like it’s caught in between two mediums without fulfilling either one.
Just my opinion / constructive criticism. And again, great job with the sculpting!

I see it, and quite-readily accept it just the way it is … as a sculpture. However, the “realistic hair” is inconsistent with that interpretation.

What I would do with this is to sculpt the hair as it would be done if this were, indeed, a bronze or other sculpture of a boy, placed just-so with his metal/plastic hands holding a real[-looking] leaf. That would be an extremely original idea, whether in real-life or in CG, deliberately juxtaposing a thing that is “utterly-natural but not-alive,” with, “life.” A very artistic statement.

Even if your final plans are to texture this and make “a real boy,” I would seriously consider doing both.
