Discworld: Unseen University

I did a bit more research (read some disc world stuff) and realised that Sator Square is not only a market place, but a meeting place where people debate, protest and advertise.

Bear in mind that in the final model there will be people in the Square; standing on the platforms, behind the stalls etc.

Excellent job on the square Monk, just curious, how big of vert count and memory has Discworld grown to?

Funny you should ask. It had just got to the point that blender was becoming unworkably slow so I’ve just spent the last hour separating parts ito their own files and lining them back into the scene.

Was just shy of 2,000,000 verts
Now down to 700,000

File working much smoother now

Screen shots of before and after.

woo. 5 stars. Thanks guys.

Looking at the map of Ankh-Morpork i noticed that the Guild of Conjurors is behind the University. So here it is.

So full of enjoyable details and nice ideas. It’s a pleasure to follow this thread.

Yeah, I have to talk to Linus, Bill and Timothy to include my name in their dictionaries next to minibus  I was playing a bit with Latin, when I picked that name. It should sound nice and it should remind me to take my Blender studies not too serious. Kind of you to ask, but your name made me ponder occasionally also

Do you have any plans for the final presentation of the University? I do like this cut off edges but I think they make it more difficult to find a final presentation. In reality such models are often in a glass cabinet in a museum. Not that I would suggest that …

It would be a great level for a puzzle game, or a first person wizard-themed shooter (with wands and hilarious spells). Unseen Tournament?

(Would buy!)

I remember when working on the playroom roof, what a pain in the a$$ doing the tiles were:) Really liking the closeup render in #104.
Hopefully we will see a number of these closeups. You’ve built up a cool little world, I don’t see how you could possibly capture it all and do it justice, with a single still render.

Rats… I thought your name MB had some cool secret meaning

Cheers guys

Minoribus: I’m still not sure about the final presentation… lots of close ups? a few wide shots? who knows? I’ll have to look into the latin now…

Mesh Monkey: That sound amazing!

Harley: I will definitely be doing more than one still.

Here is the street round the back of the uni. For Discworld fans, please note the accurate placing of the guild go conjurors and Daniel Plummit’s shop (from the map of Ankh-Morpork) and Arthur’s candle shop.

As for doing repeating tiles and breaking it up… I think I’d model the repeating part, use the array modifier for the repetitions, use a displace modifier with a low strength and a procedural texture for the irregularities, make a box for the outer limits and use it for a boolean modifier on the roof tiles object. Seems that would be less manual labour. (I’d duplicate the final results and apply the modifiers there and then hide the original objects since they may be slow to evaluate otherwise.)

This is Brilliant! I’ve been building a superdetailed version of the cut-out book, and you have so many great ideas! I especially like your Sator Square details. Great work!

This is beautiful work, MonkMonk! What a scene, I love the texture of the ground, and the color choices. Lovely work on the buildings and small details!

Like Speed I just traveled through the entire thread and what a treat. The whimsical world you’ve created here is really something. And, the running mini tutorials are a welcome bonus.

good job, have personality…

Wow, great project…lovely art style ! Looking forward for the final result.

So I know this is an old thread, but I figured it didn’t hurt to ask.

I’m starting up a “something to tinker on after work” project to rough out the full Ankh-Morpork using the nice new maps that are available for layout, and was curious if you would be willing to allow me to utilize your model of the Tower of Art? even a low poly non-textured version would rock to be honest, im just in the blocking stage currently.
