Durian Project - Best ever movie moments

The Lion King when Simba realizes that a stamped is coming towards him  Is still, for me, the best sequence ever made, all time, in the motion pictures industry. If one can put that kind of emotion in a movie… it can’t fail

I know there are some good animators on the project but is Durian going to be experimenting with motion capture? If realism is the aim, hand-animated characters will take ages to get right.

Even if it’s not body movement but just facial capture. This sort of thing would help out a lot of individual animators. People at home will typically have a web-cam and can draw markers on their face. If there was a way to have Blender track those points and then map the movements onto controllers possibly also using some IPO cleanup tool, it would make the process of mapping dialog onto a face so much quicker.

You wouldn’t have to lip-sync anything manually. You could record the audio and facial movements at the same time. Then adjust the IPOs/controls as necessary.

Having no dialog like BBB will cut out a lot of work but again may be harder to put across a meaningful story.

Wow just watched that "the Good the Bad and the Ugly"clip with Clint, I’de forgotten just how intense that was. Even sitting at a PC! Who needs dialogue with a score like that. If that was picture locked before scoring, then that is seriously good cutting!

But I guess dialogue is for the funnies. One good review I heard recently about anything from Pixar was it’s NON-reliance on popular culture. No stupid jokes about the judges from American Superstar or music video knockoffs, all just great characterisation.

Just getting finished though will be a milestone!

Halo Real niceee !!!

Matrix & Ghost in The Shell

Matrix Revolutions - Battle For Zion

Halo 3 Trailer

@3pointEdit:
Agree, Sergio Leone movies and Ennio Morricone score fused together like Trunks and Goten (naturally) from Dragon Ball

Some examples:
The Good, The Bad and the Ugly:

Once Upon a time in the West:

For a Few Dollars More:

It’s one of my role models

Another great western movie with great characters! it have some great epic fights too…

3:10 to Yuma

Yeah, it’s the same thing except Durian’s breathes red fire instead of blue fire.

And otherwise this shows a scene straight out of Reign of Fire.

I think Blender can do most of it. Not sure about the energy effects or the particle fx when the Lich brushes the snow off the ice.

I’m pretty sure they used an animated displacement map for it,
there’s a making of article somewhere on the net I’ll see if I can find it.

ah here:
http://www.cgchannel.com/news/viewfeature.jsp?newsid=8144

they state the use of an animated displacement map on page 2.
particles were used to cover up the edges.

The best fight scenes I’ve seen all year are in the Dead Fantasy series of animations by montyoum.

Ninja Scroll (the movie) was pretty neat 2D animation classic with many spectacular fights…

Awesome thread! I’m gonna have to go watch all these videos.

@rogper - Love love love that sequence from The Lion King. Gives me chills every time.

Hey , nice thread ! I will read it for sure , nice link

I love Evangelion ; Akira ; and of course a lof anime. I grew reading manga since I’m 11 years old.
One of my strongest influence not present on the mood board is the old video game : Secret of Mana. I’m a deep fan of it !

About my illustration above (link) ; “spectacular” on the Durian website :
For the War Craft 3 and Wrath of the Litch king trailer I pretend to think that my picture was pinned to their mood Board ; I painted it cause the representation of the Litch was rarefull ( I’m a Adv.Dung.Drag rolist too ) Check this ; http://features.cgsociety.org/challenge/spectacular/entry.php?challenger=9357 >> ( Date Submitted: Monday, 28 November 2005 )
ha ha
I’m a visionary!

My favorite movie moment is in Spiderman-2, when Spiderman can’t walk up walls, and has to take the elevator. Awkward moment ensues!

The Burly Brawl from Matrix, just one word: UNBEATABLE:

Best scene EVER SO FAR.

Oh, sorry SamCameron, but that was the worst fight scene I have (almost) ever seen. The CG stuff just took me right out of the scene and it ended up looking sadly pointless to my eye. Such a shame when the first movie took fights and gun play to extremes succesfully.
And the last epic battle on the street seemed such a let down, strange when so many other superhero flix get the set up so right with tension etc.

3pointEdit, you feel like this with this scene because you’re just focus on the CG… consider then the editing, the coreography, the music, everything as a whole thing, cause I think… to have a fight scene of 100 clones against 1 person it’s quite an outstanding, very impressing work, very difficult to get these results.

Matrix Reloaded was a disappointment.
The fight scenes looked like dance choreography, Neo never looked threatened. It felt really dull

What the Durian Project team needs to work out is on the story, dialogues and make the characters sympathize to the viewers. If they achieve that, you can throw whatever cool fight CGI scene and it’ll work.

As a suggestion I’d like to see some fight scenes like this one:

I couldn’t get the link to load.

From you’re post though, I gather your painting has nothing to do with Durian? Or is it generally representative of the subject matter?

Since you’re working on Durian maybe you can help me out, because I’ve been wondering why Durian looks so much like my movie/comic project - www.extinctionlevelevent.com.

Even the color palette on durian.blender.org looks like it came from my site.

Oh yes, the escape scene is the best scene in the whole movie. Sadly I couldn’t find a video of it to show :frowning:

One of my favorite animes too. Have you seen the trailer of the new movie?
http://www.apple.com/trailers/independent/evangelion10/

I wonder when they continue with the live action movie.

Montyoum is really a great resource for fighting scenes. Maybe too much for Durian, but really great:

Yes this painting on Durian website is only here to illustrate a bit the page, just put colors and talk of the subject as the moodboard do.
For your website design ; I didn’t knew it before ;
I like to do comparison too, and I’m happy you share it ; but the webdesign are very very different in a lot of point. Beautifull site , btw , and good project, I’m happy you switched to Ubuntu for your project and use Gimp; have you tried Gimp-painter & Gimp Paint Studio ? and Mypaint 0.7 ? incredible software, you will surely like it cause you look a skilled 2D artist.

For my inspiration, when I did the Durian webdesign , I was painting the picture under ( a WIP for the Dominance War contest ) , and I was passionate between the contrast of saturation on a type of a Dark vermillon and a Royal blue. So I did this colors for the webdesign ; that’s all …

After, the Durian’s main guidelines are just usual teenager element.
So : big no no ; we don’t stole your work and idea  We have too much of self generated idea here.
