FabiArt´s Sketchbook

My own little place where all the projects go, that i either didn´t finish (yet) or that are just fun sculpts or studies. Have fun ^^

First one is from a while ago, when i started again with blender after a long pause. I was always interested in sculpting and character design, but i also like to stray from that path once in a while.

This bro is really tired i guess ^^

He seems a little bewildered. How about giving him a handsome hair, I guess he would then break into a smile.

Could be, might try it in a while

From a tutorial by @Kaizentutorials , i switched to a different style of animal, i like turtles a lot, so i wanted to do one of these.

Ready for a fantastic plushy tea party! ^^

Started with repeating patterns, i created the groundtiles, i was inspired by my own tiles here at my home. After that i wanted to create a little sportscene, so there´s that ^^ Little Sportroom sketch, it was very fun!

Gotta relax them upper eyelids, bro looks shocked

Any chance for more angles of the head? and did you use any references?

Thanks for the tip! Yeah, those were my first attempts at sculpting faces

I have to look it up, if i got the project file still, then yes i can show more angles, but for the most part those are just quick studies i do, i often don´t save those

References are key! ^^ I use figurines as well as pictures for reference. With figurines i like that you can turn them around, also i like the haptics for better understanding

I had a lot of fun, sketching this! Just playing with forms and shapes of the face to give him a bit of character ^^

Also tried to improve my composition skills. Here are some scenes (for better or for worse  ) where i tried to implement some of the compositional guidelines (Form, Thirds, contrast):

I actually like this one a lot, it´s easy for the eyes for me ^^

Here i played with the diagonal composition.

Here i tried to get like a s - shape going, also playing with scale ^^

Better than my attempts back in the day when sculpting heads from scratch, I eventually switched over to poly modelling completely and used it as a base for sculpting.

Good that you use references, they are indeed crucial. To be honest one can work without any ref in hand, but one would really need to have a good imagination or direction that they would want to go from the start.

Anything that makes a face model stand out is good, make it more rememberable/unique. Honestly that applies to anything when it comes to stylized modelling.

Just tricky to make good UVs due to the proportions or even retopologize for a low poly. Either way good practice, keep working on it :eyes:

Yeah, i also had difficulties just sculpting from a sphere ^^
Now i use different methods on achieving a basemesh, for faces i like metaballs a lot actually - just a sphere and a cube and you´re good to go! For whole characters i often also use polymodeling, especially when using references for tracing. Skin modifier is also an option sometimes, i think it depends mainly on how i think i can achieve a basemesh as easy and fast as possible so i can go to the high poly sculpt

I think sometimes working without reference is a good way to use ones own creativity (or pattern recognition), and it´s often more “relaxing”(?) in a sense, because you can just go off and do your thing and see which forms you like and refine them and surprise yourself about the result

And i find it a good way to overcome the “perfectionism” in art. I find it sometimes very paralyzing to have this feeling that the artwork is still not done no matter what. Sometimes calling it a day is more rewarding in a long run ^^

Thats true!

And yeah, retopology is a completely different topic  But this is also always a good practice, trying to retopologize the model as good as possible. But it also depends on what you want to achieve, so if its a stillife, an animation and so on. Sometimes you just can do a quad remesh and call it a day: If retopology is not my focus, i just make a quick remesh (for example if i wanna focus more on texturing a.s.o.)

Just a small doodle ^^

Working on a tutorial series by the talented SpeedChar ^^

And also working on a character Idea i had for a while, Dr. C. Alamari

Had this idea of an Owl Mask, i like the design, maybe doing a full render

I really dig masks and this one looks really good. Gives me venetian mask vibes, you know the ones that usually have the Scaramouche, Volto, Bauta and so on.

I think the only element missing is having some sort strap to properly hold it on the face, as long as it still looks elegant.

Yeah you´re right! ^^ This was just a quick sketch, but for the full render i will definitely put a strap or something like that on. I just don´t have a concept yet what to do with the rest of the head, i like the tricorn, but maybe using a cowl or something also more in a venetian or barock style maybe. I think a reference gathering session is in the making
I also don´t know what kind of impression i get from this: Maybe more sinister or something festive or something mysterious - yeah i definitely have to look more into it!

I’d aim for something more mysterious, I still remember the masks in Murder at Masquerade Manor and I’m pretty sure the artist took some liberties there but still proof of good execution.
