Fighting off the Darkness

definitely looking better. for the feet, i would make the tips much less pointy, and widen the toe area.

one further critique on the arms; the area where the deltiods meet the traps seems too smooth; i think there should be a greater contrast between the two. the general shoulder/neck area needs more definition.

I fixed the feet finally. He isn’t wearing women’s boots any more yay! lol
I also tried to incorporate the suggestions on the deltoids. Brought out the collar bone a little more. Is this closer to what you mean?

much better! looking good now. what’s next? you going to texture him or go ahead and start rigging?

I think I’m going to try to rig him so I can get him posed. We’ll see how that goes. lol

just in case you need some help with rigging, if you want, here’s a good tutorial for rigging :BBB Rigging Tutorial , although it may be a little too extravagant if you don’t plan to animate him…
if you’d like a less complex one, here’s the blender wiki: http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/BSoD/Introduction_to_Rigging

Ok, well apparently I suck at rigging and am getting terrible results. I’m trying to pose the arms into the position in the concept and the deformations are just depressing. I’m using a very simple rig and using weight paint. Any suggestions on how to get a good shoulder deformation?

You can see how the mesh gets completely torn. I have tried various combinations of weight painting but can get a decent result.

Can one of you gurus out there please give me some help with this? Do I need to remodel the shoulder area or make a more complex armature that accounts for muscle deformation or something?

After playing with this for a while I managed to get rid of the mesh tearing. The weight paint is VERY touchy. Anyways, here is what I managed to get with the shoulder area. It still isn’t 100% but it’s definitely closer.

that’s looking pretty good. another place to look for some good info on weight painting (and pretty much anything you need to know) is the Mancandy FAQ (i honestly don’t know why they couldn’t have chosen a different name for him :stuck_out_tongue: ) HERE YOU GO

Slowly getting this thing rigged/weighted and placed into the final pose. Still isn’t quite there yet, but its getting closer.

Once he is posed I’m going to apply the armature and then sculpt the model to my liking. Some of the muscles look a bit odd still and there is much detail to be added.

I think this is almost the right pose. The back of the mesh is a mess so its a good thing its not facing the camera.

in your sketch, it looked like his back was arched a lot more, and his feet were a little further apart. having said that, it IS your design, you’re free to change/adjust it as you see fit

his hands look a bit bony now… maybe once they’re closed into fists they’ll look better.

all in all, it’s starting to take shape! keep going!

Yes, I do want the back to be arched more. It is difficult to get the stomach verts to deform correctly when he is hunched over (lots of mesh tearing). I’m still working on that. I want to try to stay as close to my concept as possible since I like the look of it. The fingers are way too skinny right now. Once he’s locked down I’ll use the inflate brush in sculpt mode and get them looking better. I plan on sculpting down those arms also as now they look too bloated at the joints and just overall.

Here are some updates. I think I just about have him posed. There are some more minor tweaks with the feet I think but this is just about there. Once he is posed I can start sculpting which is my favorite part.

good job, can’t wait to see the sculpting stage.

Here is the final pose with armature applied. I will fix all the creases first.

It’s been interesting to watch your progress on this pose. I think you’ve definitely got it now.

Hmm, that looks great! Can we see a side view?

Sure, here is a side view with wires. The reason i have been doing all the shots from the front is because the final shot will be from the front.

Here is some level 2/3 sculpting on the right shoulder and upper arm.

<<<just realized the pic was stretched>>

That looks a lot more natural on his right arm, good work.
