Following the Blender Conference 2007

I don’t think so. It said it couldn’ty find the URL.

is it me or is this years coverage of blender confrence been really really rough?

web cam has been down, blendernation only posted one artical on friday and for saturday and sunday nothing posted about the confrence at all? last year i believe they posted an artical everyday, and they recorded tons and tons of video interviews, and had them up already. but this year blendernation.com has basically nothing? whats going on?

last year there was tons of photos on every blender site, the webcam was up and rolling the whole time, tons and tons of videos were uploaded (this year the only two videos found on google is one of the suzzanne awards, and one of some robotic footage used for the suzanne awards?)
rough man, rough…DANG!

for those of us who cant make the confrence this is the only way we can stay connected. and this year there was no connection…DANG!! i want to conncet! i want to connect !!! HELP ME TO CONNECT!!! PLEASE!!!

ahhhh, i ignore me…i’m just trying to locate footage of the peach annoucment footage from today…anyone have the video…please upload to youtube.com if so…i want to see!!!

by the way goofster, haha, updating everyhour, you only have five pictures of ton… from friday…seems you missed a few hours…rough this year guys…ROUGH!!!

The new location (de Zwijger) and the lack of support mostly resulted in the absence of lots of content this year.
The webcast (if you can call it that) was a last minute thing scrounged up by me and Ileoo through IRC, and as I had never done webcasts before, and my old powerbook was (trying) to encode the stream the resulting feed was far from perfect.

Next Year I will go back to my usual reppporting through IRC or ask Bart to access blendernation to do the same kinds of “live text coverage feeds” they usually have for apple events.
I’d love to have a few decent computers with camera’s and wifi to make streams available next time, but for a “this is the 5th year of blender, whoopiie!” I admit to not having been really surprised at any new cool stuff, I even get used to the level of work @ndy produces, so that tells you much about my “meh?” feeling about this conference.

From personal experience I know that when it gets to this kinds of levels it means the organiser, although thinking about it, just didn’t have the time to pull it off as we would have liked it. Fortunatly next year we’ll have people dedicated to the conference putting everything together through the blender Institute, if I understood correctly.

I also miss the comfy cosy setting of the Waag society, although it cannot fit everyone it is a lot more “user friendly”, and they specialise in doing coverage and have the tools to do so.

Ton or anybody reading this: although the Zwijger is a nice location it just isn’t suited for a Bconf. It’s too far from the center (for the people also wanting to visit Amsterdam). It’s personnel, although being very friendly and helpfull just are not confortable dealing with blenderheads. And the “gezelligheidsfactor”(only dutch can understand, no translation available, close to : comfy cosiness) was missing.

I know Amsterdam is a great venue, and it’s close to the Institute offices, but next year I’d really like to go to another city, like Utrecht, and use different facilities to get back in the mood of The Waag. Or go back to the Waag and hire the dinning room too, with a plasma screen or beamer set up to broadcast what’s happening in the theatrum Annatomicum… I wonder what an outdoor stage would cost in front of the Waag on the marketplace… Hey ideas is a thing I never lack off, I’m just suggesting options, I’m not even thinking too much about practicality at the moment.

And last, but not least, to us Dutch people: the koffee wasn’t drinkable on friday, was nearly drinkable on saturday, and swallowable on sunday…

Now lets get to the GOOD stuff (there was some). The blender Institue announcement, in short : WOOOHOOO! because it will revitalise the whole Blender structure, having people to do stuff to free up time for Ton to code is always great news. Also the Institute will provide the possibility to start commercial activities with blender more easyly, and keep blender safely in the hands of the foundation at the same time.
Other good news: Peach. It seems the crew is getting along really well, and with @ndy as art director I expect he will get the greatest stuff out of the artists and programmers for the project.
The training CD: looks great I hope the commentary will be up to par with the work being shown, but the trips and tricks will be definitly worth it!
Pro’s using blender: they’re starting to come out of the woodwork, and the work produced being shown is really on the same level as the other tools used in the industry.
Verse: Eskil is continuing to show off great stuff, that you have to see to understand what it is.
People: I have to say the audience was a little older this year than previous years, but there were a lot of known faces.
Developpers: the Physics Sprint previous to the conference took away a little of the usual coders verve from the conference itself. But they were definitly present and “doing stuff” during the conference (I’m not a good coder so I wouldn’t dare get close to the “arcane corner where the coders are”).

Overall I’d say it was a "nice"conference, I got to meet some people, see some interesting projects, exchange a few business cards, and record/broadcast what I could online.
I really missed the buzz, the feeling we’re doing something great, that we are changing the world. It’s all starting to sound like “business as usual”. People look like they are happy but tired. The passion I saw four years ago was probably dissipated in the physics sprint and in people being busy organising projects. And I severely missed the presence of true newbies, I did not see any of the usual “lost hudleld in a corner, lonely new guy/gal”.

Well, I had a lot of fun at the blender conference… so THANK YOU! It was great! =)
So was it you Hoxolotl, the guy who sat on the first row and had the video cam, the guy I asked to stop the stream while I showed that one clip? I forgot the mention my name though ^_^; heheh. Anyway, thanks everyone who made the Blender Conference. I really am happy I came there. It was a lot of fun, the best part was actually to meet the guys who I’m talking to almost every day on #blenderchat and #blendercoders. =)

Thank you very much Hoxolotl.
Things change you know but we don’t have to let ourselves carried with the current if we don’t like it.
This feed that you tried to give us was a quite difficult undertaking and I appreciate your efforts. After all you are the one who did the most to try to connect us to the conference.

I share you feelingt of slight disappointment but maybe it’s just reality that is catching up with us. We are people of imagination and as such we should be able to still pull out some fun out of it all, shouldn’t we ?

Jean

Yes Falgor that was me
There’s been a few moments at this conference where “you had to be there” applies

I think a sticky thread preparing for next year’s conference will be in order
I’ll make a list of stuff that needs to be done, people will comment, the list will change, get better, and things that are done will be marked off… that way next year, we’ll rock everybody’s socks off, get a PR-slashdot plan ready and get the word out.

No, no thank you this year guys, sorry… I mean, why the hack you didn’t say what special software we will need for watching BC?! At least one day before… Good said Super Wu-Man! Yes it sucked, it sucked big time! I asked the guy on irc about this issue and you know what he said?! Donate me something! I mean, c’mon, I can donate you the face punch for your stupid blank screen! Also, in the uploaded BC video there was only a few animations, but OK, at least we saw a lot of robot clones… :RocknRoll:

Sur lets all complain before taking the time to read any threads: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=107324
Where somebody clearly says what software to use, and gives the link to the stream again. I would have said : “RTFM STFU Noob!” but this is Blender we are talking about, so I’ve been very patient and explaining to polite people how to get stuff working. Just barging in and demanding stuff is not going to rock my boat.

About the stream issue: how would you feel if you got to a conference, saw no webcam/camera, volunteered your own personal laptop and iSight to do the streaming and people like popski start demanding stuff like they feel they have a right to it…

Well let me spel it out for you whiners: you don’t have a right to anything, if you want to, you’re welcome to help us, you’re welcome to be constructive and help other members fix things. Blender isn’t Adobe or Alias owned, we don’t have a budget of a trillion dollars to do PR and respond to your whims, hell if it weren’t for volunteers there wouldn’t even be any Blender to speak of, this forum would not exist, and so on and so forth. Also people cannot be held responsible for your own lack of computer knowledge, it’s so easy bitchin’about it, but have you thaught for a second, that just one click and a litlle of your own goodwill away, there might already be a solution…
Before Friday I had NEVER ever done a live broadcast, it was only possible thanks to Ileoo’s help with providing us a server. Also my notebook is a little bit old and buggy (I bought it in 2003 and I’m a power user, it’s been on 16 hours a day for 4 years, and it’s been with me through rain, dust, fog, and many offroad trajects as I use it to regulate the sound for outdoor events, usually just pulling a plastic bag over the top to keep the rain from killing it).

Goofster, please DO flag popski as a Noob. And not a Newb: http://www.p2pforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=31190

But I have to agree with Popski :frowning:
it could’ve been a lot better

Hoxolotl said it all I think. It’s a shame live coverage wasn’t as good this year. But take comfort in the fact that a bunch of sessions were videotaped and will be available online. In my opinion, that’s better than seeing a webcam.

It shouldn’t be the visitor’s task to cover the event. Also, we pay a lot of money, take time of work, sleep in hotels to visit this conference. You have no right to bitch about the lack of coverage. It’s a physical event, and if you want to follow it intensely, there is no other way than to fly to Amsterdam…

About the photo thing. For some reasons I had trouble uploading my photos to flickr at De Zwijger (probably Govert’s webcam messing up the network! ) I uploaded the rest of my pictures a few minutes ago.
Roel

ps. the new venue, although practical, doesn’t have the same atmosphere of De Waag. And visiting the conference 6 times gets a little old…

Govert= Hoxolotl

MY webcame, messing up the network?! never! holds iSight webcam and starts cleaning it my preciousss would nefer do zuch a zing!.. prrreeehcioussss…don’t listen to mean Goofster…precioussss.

Haha man, you took this just too personally. You wasn’t the one on irc who told me to donate him for the blank screen, huh?! :eyebrowlift2: Also you are not blender.org, so where’s the problem then? I wasn’t bitching on irc that day just because I didn’t want to make people nervous over there, but now when it’s all over… why not? If we’ll all hail everything, no one will even notice that wasn’t all the best. I’m sure that will be next year better! & hoxolotl, thank you for making many people happy with a live coverage, but unfortunately I wasn’t in that group.

That was my first blender conference, and I have to say I thought it was pretty awesome! Great to finally meet you people; especially Ton and the guys from
Peach.

Live video may not have been so good this year, but next time I think we will have live coverage of Goofster’s exact location at all times…

so…peach made there annoucment sunday morning…sacha was at the microphone trying to be funny, and reading the annoucement with his bad humor and broken english…and william from project peach came out dressed as a rabbit…

and it was not recorded?..someone is going to die for this…

do you know how many times people would have watched this, do you know how many people would have been introduced to project peach if this would have been put on video and put on the internet…do you know how many dvds this publicity stunt would have sold??..ok proably none…but it would have been really funny and really good for project peach and building popularity…but…WERE WAS THE CAMERA GUY!!!

man i wanted to see this…DANG!

Say–eeehm-Wu? what happened to your unbelievable super powers? The peach announcement has been recorded, but will be available in about a week or three… yes some people have lives, need to get back home and work before they can edit some tape over the week-end… And as soon as I recieve the donation of 50.000 Euro’s you promised me I’ll put the recorded broadcast streams on youtube, how about that?

Looking forward to your recorded tapes hoxolotl. While I agree it would have been nice to have penguin warriors and a professional camera crew I appreciate you recording most of the content. Also it would be great if you put them on a site that allows the video’s to be downloaded like Revver or blip.tv

P.S don’t wait for money from Super Wu. His Wu-ing power will find a loophole so he won’t have to pay.

Ben Hodges (“on” on the forum) recorded a bunch of sessions with a good camera from the balkony (I think with a link to the mixer too). Not sure if he recorded the peach session.

From what I gather he did record the Peach Session on the last tape he had.

i will never doubt you again…well maybe…dang! you had the wu’s back the whole time, why didnt you say anything butt nugget? dang! now i have to go and appologize! DANG!!

my appologizes to hoxolotl and the blender community, i doubted you and i was wrong…i can admit my faults and pay my debts,

super greatness is a little low on cash flow at the moment, so i will have to pay you in nude photos…of me karate flexing…just post the email address you want them sent to and i will deliver asap…

ps…the annoucment video and the bunny suit is the greatest moment in blender history…period…i dont care what films anyone makes or what models anyone makes. the idea to have sacha read a english annoucment with his broken ass english, and then have william come out in a bunny suit is bloody freaking brilliant! best moment ever…

hoxolotl please work on this video first!! we must see it!! and sorry again…the wu messed up…

edit: read the previous postings and I seem to have missed the one telling us to wait a few weeks…

Well, the conference is over now. I was attending, but there were some moments I did want to cut myself in half to be able to follow the two rooms. Will there be videos available like the ones from last year? They were pretty good quality, and with the awesome sound system we had this year, I guess it would be really cool.

I was glad about the live-stream, because one day before the conference I thought there would be nothing. No accusation to Hoxolotl, he did what he was able to do, but one thing bothers me. On stage the people were talking about professional work, talking about 4k highend-film tecnics and professional equipment, professional workflows etc., but the presentation in the web was less than professional - it was improvisation. I`m shure, things were planed in a different way…
