Free or very affordable alternatives to Adobe tools

Maybe try sending an email to Martin, in each of his videos he emphasizes that he is available to communicate with about problems like that.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but this one is an alternative cheap painting app with good feature set.

I played with BlackInk some time ago. Very interesting drawing and sketching app, all procedural, really nice and very affordable.

I highly recommend Material Maker which is free which is a great alternative to substance designer. Very very good. You can even make group nodes and save to your node library for reuse in other projects.

Thanks for sharing, looks interesting. Is it Windows-only?

The first release candidate of GIMP 3.0 is out. Test it and report bugs!
Since this release took more than a decade to develop, the news are a lot, but non-destructive fx are the highlight, for me. The hope is that now that they are almost finished with this hard port of the software to GTK 3, they’ll manage to work on features and attract developers and donations to accelerate the pace. They have also announced that they are assembling a team dedicate to improving the UI, which I think is sorely needed. As much as it is not perfect (and to be fair its name sucks), GIMP is still the most complete opensource image editor!

Yes, Windows only
I am a “Black Ink” Lover too and own a copy.
Node Layers and parametric Brushes.
Since its new Version 2023.6 Black Ink have a
Symmetrie Operator Node Layer.

Arguably Krita could be said to have as many image editing features compared?

Made a new version of that list of apps.

It still didn’t have VectorStyler or VivaDesigner listed. And those are serious alternatives to respectively Illustrator and InDesign that really must be mentioned.

Damn I’ve wanted this in Krita really bad. The issue is, while you can paint with symmetry, that only goes for the brushstrokes. Any selection+transformation you do won’t be mirrored

@Herbert123 thanks. Really nice to have all this packed into an image, with a version number too :ok_hand:

made a little test in Black Ink

Yes, definitely, you’re right to say this! I should have pointed it out, as in fact I use Krita more personally. GIMP has more filters and better text tools, and I feel it has a “generalist” focus that is more akin to PS.

Nice, thanks! I’ve replaced the one in the original post with this one. :+1:

By the way, Affinity Photo 2.6 Beta has some nice machine learning features. They are installed locally, nothing lands in the net.

Take this, Badobe!
