General AI Discussion

US copyright office issues new report on
AI and copyright.
TLDR:
Write a prompt the default output cannot
have copyright protection.
Alter default output or combine it as part of a larger transformative work and the whole work has copyright protection even if the AI elements within does not.

Example:
Most of the voices and all of the music in this animated cartoon series, I am producing for my young Grandsons, are all AI created.
The 2D puppet animation is my work
Thus youtube will accept my copyright claim and strike you, if you repost it on your channel.

Finally the Copyright Office does not see any need for NEW legislation on AI at this time and given recent events regarding”Project Stargate”
IMHO, it does not seem likely that there will be new efforts to nerf AI by policy makers.

On the other hand, it also means I could take the music and voices and do whatever the hell I like with it and you or youtube couldn’t do a thing about it.

Yes indeed you could undertake the tedious process of taking my flattened mp4
and extracting the music from the ambient background sound effects (birds, cars , barking dogs), and voice dialogue and end up with a
pile of random audio content with zero context.
But to what practical end?
For that ridiculous amount of labor you may as well have produced it all yourself from scratch or at least mixed in AI generated elements relevant to your story context and you would still have Youtube copyright protection from re-use.

Or I could just let Davinci Resolve AI filters do it for me automatically.

But you are right, I’d then largely end up with a pile of useless random audio that would likely be of no interest to anyone and as such, I could just use AI to randomly create my ‘own’ anyway.

However, that’s not really the point. The point is the danger in using AI in a much more meaningful, commercial product or endeavor, where one would want total control and hence copyright of not just the final item as a whole, but all the parts that make it up.

Actually the true “danger is continuing to
believe that owning the copyright to every bit of audio and visual data you create , will still have commercial value in this new age of visual/audio post scarcity.

Copyright laws do not have to change because
there will be no scarcity creating value in the very things you are trying to prevent others from having without compensating you.(imagery, music, programming code).

Just have a look at the fictional Star Trek universe where sub atomic replication technology has created general societal post scarcity across all sectors.
there are no Billionaires in star trek with wealth from producing and selling things
or enforcing IP laws because the means of general production is in the hands of every individual at the press of a button.

This is happening ,on a much much smaller scale, right now in imagery, sound ,writing.
going forward the “value” in such works will have to come from whatever narrative/message it promotes/sells
or the personal popularity of the individuals ,parties associated with said narratives/messaging.

Not the imagery, sound ,writing etc itself because anyone will be able to produce this content

Love how you regard all artistic creation, except apparently for the synopsis, as peripheral…

Troy verbally attacked people, regularly treated other members with derision, and drowned questions seeking practical answers with endless musings on how the brain might or might work when we look around the room.

He may have a deep knowledge on color theory, but his conversational style leaves a lot to improve on.

My view is of visual art irrelevant
what is relevant are the effects of scarcity
and/or abundance on the economics of the commercial markets.
( basic supply & demand)
people are free to sit and assign all sorts
mystical, philosophical attributes to
audiovisual, literary entertainment
and make emotional , moral arguments against
against specific abundance if they desire.

but to sit an pretend that copyright’s value is not derived from the scarcity of thing being copyrighted is just delusional.
and by scarcity in this instance I mean the product of an individual human minds/imagination emotions, visualized ,written or sung etc.

Sadly this also includes the value of the often scarce human labor that is being replaced by AI in certain areas in the area specific, post scarcity era that is upon us.
yes it will be very disruptive not only economically by mentally on the population as well .

scary times.

… in short: peacock feathers.

The endpoint to which all human activity seems to converge, in the age of social media … welcome to idiocracy.

PS:
“narrative”, “message” … I beg you. Democratize ideas! Why should only people privileged with brains and imagination have them? Any “message” you want, for every mood and taste, at your finger’s tip … no thought that crosses your mind and makes your head head ache, ever again! :+1:

No …I am making mostly kids cartoons these days for My grandsons.
not even using Blender but Reallusion Cartoon Animator and some Adobe Character animator as well as it has nice facial tracking built-in
even for full bearded men like myself.

You don’t get to make accusations like this without proof. Back it up or don’t say it in the first place.

A lesson I learnt a long time when I created a line of sheepskin pullover jackets and shopped it around to all the major fashion retailer here in Canada is that protecting intellectual property is as valuable as one has the means to back up a copyright.

In the following year of me shopping around my fashion designs … my exact designs were stolen and appeared on the racks of fashion retailers.

AI is even scarier and a lot darker.

Yet you do it all the time, and I do not see you flagging your own posts.

Stop giving yourself an exemption and perhaps we can actually be on good terms with each other. One of these days an alternative to BA will spring forth where people can actually have a discussion without being flagged for no reason.

Quite often I have done nothing wrong and only told the truth, why is the truth so difficult for BA?

I’m not going to look for the post, and even the paraphrasing I’m going to do is likely to get flagged. But to your point: near the time before Troy voluntary asked for his account and all posts to be deleted, he responded to Joseph with “Fuck you Joseph. Fuck you and fuck off and fuck off while you’re fucking off.”

I don’t recall anyone on staff immediately banning Troy, which would often be the result in other areas of the internet. That’s how much patience was shown to Troy.

I don’t remember anyone on staff ever going to that level of extended disrespect to anyone here.

(Personally I laughed for an hour after I read that post, and told Joseph we needed to get tshirts printed with that quote…)

ETA: enough about Troy. Has absolutely nothing to do with this thread.

I don’t think you understand what copyright is, or why it exists as a legal concept. Or, have a very skewed personal view of it.

Then right now would not be a period where I am physically shaking violently and apparently on the verge of falling physically ill again in part because of the stress the staff imparts on me.

Is this intended to be a community these days or is it just Bart’s personal webpage? The fact that just about everything from design to policy is non-negotiable appears to point to the latter.

Then you should take some time away. If this forum is mentally and physically taxing to you health, then you should disengage from it until you can manage it.

I don’t read Facebook, because it just invoked feelings of anger. The choice was “be angry every morning, or lose the Facebook browsing.” I’m happier just not knowing what people say on Facebook.

I’ve seen policy and design changes in this site in the past year. Some were Bart’s own idea to improve the site (which they did), and some of the policy changes were due to members raising the point.

So, Bart does not do things in a bubble. There have even been changes he considered, which were NOT implemented after quite a few regulars said “don’t love the idea.”

Hey y’all can we please bring this back to a general AI discussion and not some random pissing contest about BA artists, and whether it is fair about flagging posts, and some guy named Troy. Additionally as has been said before @Ace_Dragon, if this site causes so much stress, there are viable alternatives to BA such as several discord servers about blend, so please can everyone simmer down and get back to talking about AI. Here is a good question I think would make interesting discussion:
What do you think Deepseek means for the greater 3d modelling and animation community, good or bad what changes do you think it will bring?

But it will and even more so. If anyone can produce ‘this content’ by pressing an AI button, then the overall flood of endless, meaningless AI drivel, will in turn mean that something original and human created is likely to be of greater value and hence worth protecting (ie copyright).

This will likely be amplified as AI starts to more and more feed on itself. As in if so much of the ‘new’ content is AI generated, then it all becomes an even larger pile of meaningless ‘crap’.

Now sure, it may take a little time to all sake out, but there’s a reason why the Star Trek universe is fictional.
