Hey guys, I’m kinda new to geometry nodes in blender and wanted to know if a tree similar to the concept I have attached(I know my 2D skills are great /s) is possible via geometry nodes.
I understand that this can be done via mesh quickly, but I wanted to see if this can be done via geometry nodes mainly cause I thought it would be a good learning exercise and it would be easier to create variations of the tree using geometry nodes instead of manually changing the mesh shape
The concept
The muted yellow parts are trunks and branches of the tree and the blue part is a dome like thingy that sits on top of the tree. Where I need help the most is creating the web like structure of the tree branches in concept.
So any help to point me the right direction would be much appreciated.
It’s a tricky question, I think a lot of things are possible with geometry nodes, because even if the tools aren’t there , you can always hack a solution or build your own nodes ( made of simple building blocks nodes).
The question is more if it’s easy to do that kind of shapes, the way branches are connected together doesn’t seems simple to me.
You can look at the skin modifier which can help to makes these connections, even if there is a manual process.
As a starting exercise this is probably too complicated to do in geometry nodes, it’s best to start learning it with no goal in mind first and then see how to use the knowledge you get to make a result.
Finally , what is also tricky with these kind of shape is that even if they might look random, when drawing them you take care of have a good readability and some evenly spaced and sized holes.
When you’ll apply randomness to a geometry node setup, it will be really difficult to get a similar visual balance.
So it’s not about only recreating a similar shape, but also finding a good way to reproduce the rules inside your drawing, somehow rules of natures ( for a realistic result) seems more easy to me. When it gets to stylisation and reproducing a drawing , there are a lot more implicit rules that makes it complicated, and even more when drawing you’re free to brake them on some occasion for the sake of a pleasing result.
So it’s not just about finding a way to make branches just like with any procedural tree, (which are similar to how you’ll do a lightning if you look for geometry nodes lightening tutorials) , maybe you’ll need a complete different approach to match that particular style.
So yeah, if I where you I’ll try something else for this project, and you can always start learning geometry nodes on your own without a specific goal, it’s a very powerful tool much worth learning anyway.
