Help in animating a model with unusual anatomy

Hey guys, I’m not a rigging expert or anything, but can’t he just make a corrective shapekey that compensates for the distortion when the model looks up? Is this not a feasible solution because he plans to export the model to a game engine, or is it that it won’t work the way I think it will.

I think there are at least some game engines that support shape keys/blend shapes, so in theory he could make the deformation work with a shapekey and driver in blender then when he exports the model to his game engine, recreate the driver.
