HMS Gorgo | Ship of the Line

After a good couple of years of blood, sweat, tears, swears, fist-throws, praying, cursing, 2 restarts, fighting and frustrations; all has finally cumulated into a render that I can display.

Presenting: HMS Gorgo: 3rd Rate Ship of the Line with 74 Guns -

This follows from the WIP thread.

I’m really proud of this final result. It’s taken a lot of patience and perserverance to pull off, especially on hardware that (by the end) was struggling to simply move vertices - 10 minutes for a 5mm movement in some cases! There are certainly improvements that can be made, but for now I think it’s maxed out as far as my hardware goes.

I’m gonna create some more poses for the ship in the coming week and create some more stills. Eventually, I want to create an animation too. I’ll post those renders to this thread as and when.

Little bit of lore for this ship: the figurehead (you can’t really see her in this shot cos the sail is hiding her) is a Siren. The ship herself I called HMS Gorgo based on the Greek(?) Mythology. The figurehead is a Siren that was captured by the Navy and she is used to call enemies to their deaths.

The ship itself is based off of plans of HMS Bellona 1760.

Hope y’all enjoy!

Post edits:
I’ve tightened up the sails somewhat. I’ve also corrected the white line that spanned the original image. There are a handful of other minor corrections here and there. See the original here:

The rigging is amazing. Are the sails using cloth simulation or are they fixed/modeled in place?

Thank you! Yes, the sails are running on a cloth simulator. Have a look at this animation test:

The yards are also all rigged such that they can be moved (both up and down, and left to right).

Awesome! I’m not surprised that this challenges your computer.

I gather that you too own the Anatomy of the Ship with the same title then?

Beautiful work, btw.

Thank you!

Yes, though the start of the project was way before Anatomy of the Ship  That book came as a great help when I did manage to retrieve a copy!

I own 5 of the series myself (including the Bellona), and our local library here in Vancouver holds copies of most of the others. It’s possible to find digital scans of most of those via libgen.is, but holding an actual physical copy of these books in your own hands is by far preferable.

I’d like to build the 1749 Caroline myself if I ever find the time

If/when you do, keep me in the loop! I love to see people’s work of these ships!

Awesome work! The intricacies of the sail rigging are simply astounding. I have thus far limited myelf to modeling steam ships and thus kept away from age of sail ships mainly due to their complexity. However your efforts here have given me a renewed appreciation for these beatiful works of naval engineering as well!

As a history-lover myself, this looks awesome! This also reminds me of the early days of Assassin’s Creed. This looks fantastic for anyone who likes History!

Very nicely done.

Thank you! I have a lot of respect for naval engineering, especially from this era. I feel like we could take a lot of lessons from them for today’s world. Fundamentally, most of the rigging is little more than blocks and tackles and yet they built massive fighting and merchant vessels with them!

I do enjoy steamships. I find they’re often complex in their own right, especially the various battleships.

I’ve always wanted to give the Carpathia a go cos I don’t think she gets enough spotlight in the media (and everyone and their dog have done Titanic,) but I’ve not had much luck finding blueprints for her.

@thorn Thank you!

Not had a chance to play Assassins Creed myself, but I aprpeciate that the parallel!

AWESOME! I wouldn’t eve dare to start something like that, though I’d love to. IMHO, I’d fix the white line on the sky behind the ship and the reflections on the water. Not an expert, but it just got my attention. Amazing work, congrats!!!

Yeah, that white line was a bit of an annoyance when I noticed it! ::sweat_smile: I just put it down to a break in the clouds but I know what’s causing it and it should theoretically be easy enough to fix.

I do like the reflections in the water personally, though I do see why you might bring attention to it. That ocean was a pain!

I’ll tweak both when I get some more renders sorted out for you guys.
