How do i create curly hair?

hello, I have recently been trying to create my first ever character. I am very new to this and have no idea what im doing. I fiddled about till I got the head i want, but a very large part of my character is “1000% fluffy hair” as i describe it, i need it to be wild and big, with large looping curls on his head. i managed to get a hair simulation, and i read the official documentaion but i didnt get much from that. here is a screenshot:

as you can see, it is most definetly not as fluffy as i described or have any curls at all. if you know the best way to do this, please help. in the end, i am planning to make a short film with this charcter but i figured it would be usefull to know how to create them first.

Other replies will probably disagree, but Blender isn’t made for this kind of hair. You need Xgen or Houdini. There’s a reason everything from the Blender Studio is white people hair in braids or ponytails

Thank you very much. Is there a way i could make it in something like houdini and put it into blender?

Welcome :tada:…

…to make “beautyful” hair be it stylistic or “realistic” one needs to be very very specialis or at least experiment lot.

…or use some “help” ( a.k.a. extension ) like for example

https://yelzkizi.org/realistic-hair-new-hair-geometry-nodes-hair-curves/

.or anything else one any “market”

…even if using some “other” tool… one has to fiddle/learn/try a lot to make “perfect”…

And Houdini → Blender… maybe this:

( Tried myslef “hair” in some older particle system and the new and the geometry nodes hair and… always failed to make something “showable”… . So i’m eagerly awaiting more replies. )

Here are the major settings I would use for a large wild curly hair…

update: i have found a refrence picture from a year ago that i thought i had lost,

so somebody talked about the proper settings in the particle system and it looks good, but i need it to clump a bit. thank you. just please realize i am very beginner, and (phew) i dont have the budget for houdini.

i have found more and more tutorials but i am confunded buy them all. im losing motivation at a depressing rate.

Blender hair tools still feel a bit clunky and rough around the edges compared to other programs, but it is definitely possible.
Though I’d recommend you to use the new curve system, instead of the particle based hair, that one is starting to show its age, and is way harder to use and control, especially if you’re going for curly/wavy hair.

Check the demo files on the Blender.org website

And here’s a test file I was playing with for a work project where we needed to create stylized dreadlocks, maybe it can give you some ideas too.

thank you yall so much. i finally got something i can work with by separateing the scalp > adding fur > adding assets and changing paremters. the only problem is that i cant edit the geometry nodes derectly, but thats a problem i can troubleshoot.

You need to unpack the asset to edit it (makes it single user)

It’s not that bad.
