How do you add hair to underlying geomemetry in Blender?

So I have this low-poly character I’m working on and I want to replace the geometry with hair following the curves of each low-poly strand. I tried to find an approach but didn’t get to any guide. Can anyone help?

Essentially I want to transform the hair into realisitc looking instead of stylized as I originally planned for the project.

You might look into the hairnet addon if you want to do it with the ‘legacy’ hair system.
