How make a skybox for GameToons/One Piece style

Hi guys!

I beginner and just immerse myself in the atmosphere of the Blender 3D.

I’m a foreigner and I don’t understand English very well. I communicate through a translator, so I apologize for possible mistakes in words and sentence construction.

My style:

I will make my own style between GameToons/One Piece.

I don’t need photorealism, I want to make cartoons.

The way I study blender:

I study Blender 3D is in theory, and then with the knowledge I have gained, I go to check them in the program.

My question:

How to make skyboxes for my cartoon style?!

In my cartoon, there will be battles on an earthly scale, as well as planetary and universal ones.

I need a skybox to make such cartoon scenes:

Omnimen flying into space and flies off to Mars.

Cartoon scene like from game Asura’s wrath where Wyzen Beats Asura finger

So that you can make explosions that occur on Earth and are visible in space.

So that a part of the cosmos can be erased.

So that we can make a smooth transition from earth to the multiverse.

I need planets, stars, galaxies, and universes to be destroyed, taken, and at the same time fit into space like real ones in a cartoon style.

Also in my cartoon, I want to make a feature where you can rip apart black outer space and there will be a Blender 3D program behind the space.

I want the light sources to work normally, so that only the Earth is shining and the cosmos remains dark.

What I was trying to do:

I’ve been asking for advice from chat gpt and in other AI but they did not give the desired result.

These are the tips AI gave me:

  1. Skybox-sphere. This method did not suit me because the sphere did not allow light sources to pass through, and even with the normals turned out, I could not do it.

  2. AI offered me to make a skybox sphere and make it inside emission But then only the sky itself glowed, and the earth and everything else did not glow.

Otherwise, these methods were not working, and the light illuminated not only the surface of the earth but also space, which I did not!

I’m waiting for a detailed, understandable answer from you to suit my style between GameToons/One Piece. If it’s not difficult for you, please attach screenshots for clarity.

I want to learn Blender 3D for my tasks and start making cartoons.

well you can allow light throught the sphere, and sphere is widely used for creating sky.

just turn of shadow from the sky box

this is basic cloud and sky material i came up with, this is very basic, but i hope this help you

with texture you can get anime type sky texture. and skybox is a outdated idea, we all use sky dome now

The thing with AI is… but that’s another topic

You only need a skybox when you use some game engine which does use.. a skybox for representing some sky. It could also be some skydome or some equirectangular world shader.. which all need different types of textures… (you might not even need some texture.. as meanhwhile mentioned by @Webslinger_616 )

..but you mentioned blender.. then the question is also : cycles or eevee renderer.

There is some old saying:

Whatever you wanna make, know you tools and material first.

I guess you have to study a bit more about any 3D based content building first. So you might try to make some simple models first before flying to the moon mars..

that is so true, i rember i want make a animated film when i was starting blender.

Well.. “the sky is the limit” is somekind if limiting.. we can do more.. but then: we can not do all at once.. and especially not when approaching first..

Everyone has to start with the first step.. literately.

Just remember how long it took you to learn to read and write.. and some people even can not write down properly what they want to ask after years of being “out of school”.

:winking_face_with_tongue:

I’m afraid to start modeling and creating materials now because I’m afraid that without the skyboxes, I’ll see them differently and I might not like the result and I’ll have to do it all over again. I’m afraid to start modeling and creating materials now because I’m afraid that without the skyboxes, I’ll see them differently and I might not like the result and I’ll have to do everything all over again.

This Is that so or not?!

I’m confused about what to do! Materials, models, or skyboxes with light sources!

Good models and materials stand regardless of the skybox you use, this is not a valid concern. If you aren’t experienced modeling, it may also take you months to years practicing to make models you actually want to use for an animation. You are falling victim to analysis paralysis right now and taking no steps towards what you want to do. Start modeling, and take it from there.

Nothing to be afraid of..
..first make something. Study how it looks and if this is what you are aiming to/at.
Make something else; try a different technique or tool. Research how this went then..
Retry.. refine.. evolve your skill..

Again:
Everyone learnt to read and write… but not everybody does write bestsellers. And even best seller authors did not with their first story. :winking_face_with_tongue:

If you’re going for a cartoon/celshaded look, I suggest avoiding lighting with skyboxes completely.

Use as few (real) lights as possible, to get the look you’re wanting. The materials do most of the work.

As to the “I’m afraid of doing things”… this is 3D software, not invasive surgery. You’re not going to die if you try something, and it doesn’t work. The only way to get comfortable working in Blender, is to start doing it. If something doesn’t work well - fine, close the file and try something else.

..expect if one does work to “furious” without breaks.. breaks are important.. a five minute walk in fresh air can help more than one hour of “working your ass off”.. :winking_face_with_tongue:

In short, let me tell you about how I studied blender, who I am and what want!

I’ve been studying blender with AI for a year.

Chat gpt

Google Gemini

Claude

And a dozen more neural networks…

I tried to learn blender using ai, but in the endI tried to learn blender using ai, but in the end I got a minimum of information and was very tired. I have a headache, but I haven’t made much progress in the blender this year.

The training turned into bullying. I didn’t know and don’t know how to study blender properly, where to start, and so on, I cling to one thing after another, and sometimes I get stuck on one topic for months.

I came here to get people to help me figure out the blender 3D .

came here to get people to help me figure out the blender 3D .

Now I do not intend to repeat the same mistake as before, I will try to learn blender and finally start making fan animations based on video games and make my battles and series.

Which of these and in what order would you advise me to study:

Skybox

Materials/Texture

Ucupaint

Geometry nodes

Simple animation of the physics of primitives

Characters

Simple forms (Sword, bottle, cabinet, chair, etc.)

Cars

Minecraft Blocks

Buildings/rooms

Special Effects

Destruction

Grease pencil

Chopping off the limbs of characters

Lipsing

Actions

Blender Features

Plains/Mountains/base locations

Trees

Texturing features

Minecraft characters

Animation characters

Full animation

Is there something else?!

I want to see how I will finally practice in order to get into the GameToons/One Piece style and explore the blender for my tasks.

Please build my list correctly, please share tips and useful information for me and tell me how to go in order, get maximum results and burn out a minimum.

I was constantly afraid to do anything because I was constantly thinking:

  1. What if something goes wrong?

  2. What if I don’t study the whole topic completely or I forget something?

  3. What if everything I’ve done turns out to be for nothing?

I have a lot to worry about…

I would really like someone to help me and give me the right path, as I have lost over

I want to make cartoons and upload them to YouTube.

As i actually said in my recent posts here on BA:

This may sound harsh, but..

  • One has to study for the goals one wants to reach by oneself.
  • Noone knows better what you really need than you.
  • Nothing is going to teach you more experience than doing it.

And a personal trainer does coast by far more than any free tutorial.. even if you find out that it is simply not you style.. but when you find a good tutor then (s)he properly also sell course and you then know already that they are worth the price..

If one tells you how to drive your car on the right side and you are living in Great Britain.. than this might be wrongest advice you can get.

:winking_face_with_tongue:

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand anything!!! Why should I achieve everything by myself blindly?! I will try to study something for years, but I will not achieve the desired result!!! I just need to learn blender quickly and without suffering, and therefore I’m waiting for normal, correct advice that will help me, not general quotes. You couldn’t give me anything useful at all, and I just got confused!

Blender isn’t really something you learn by reading about it. I learned it by following a few tutorials in a specific way:

First I followed the tutorial and produced the intended outcome from the tutorial
Then I started over and made something similar but with a different outcome

For example I followed a tutorial on how to make a kitchen, then I made a new project and made a completely different room while having the tutorial ready to go in the background if I forgot how to do a specific step

Rinse and repeat a few times and suddenly I could do it all on my own without even having to think about it

The key is repetition as with any other skill

This is art, not a hard study like math. It’s not a problem like 1382 / 8, with a simple universal answer of 172.75. There is no PEMDAS dictating the order in which you solve 2(328 x 892 / 1218) x 2 - 10 to get 950.840. Do you understand the difference? The order of your massive list doesn’t matter, or barely matters, and many of those things are the same thing. Modeling any object, is really the same as any other, a sword and a full character are both just vertices, edges, and faces. The same goes for texturing, shading, rigging, animating, rendering. You don’t learn art like history by reading and studying about it, you learn it by doing it and practicing it. Like I said before, you have analysis paralysis, you’re too worried about doing it right, or properly or perfectly. Drop that, and just try to do anything and you will make progress. I do personally recommend learning to model before you worry about anything like skyboxes or textures. Some bare minimum modeling skills are, in my opinion, necessary even for people who largely use assets so that they can fix any weird issues that arise.

I made a very beginner friendly sword tutorial here: aimed at beginners who havent made a model yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyMLR4Me-xM

If you still consider that too advanced for you though, here’s a list of hotkeys for viewport navigation: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/editors/3dview/navigate/navigation.html I’d recommend practicing just moving around the default scene some till you feel comfortable navigating in 3d space, and maybe making some very basic things with just primitive objects, (which you can add with shift+a then clicking on one under the mesh section)

You can then select it by clicking on it, move it with G, rotate with R and scale it with S, after pressing any of those you can lock it to any axis, X Y or Z by pressing X Y or Z. Click to confirm your move/rotation/scale. Build whatever basic thing you want. Behold: a simple shack and chair made only of cubes, moved, rotated, and scaled.

Practice blocking out different objects till you feel comfortable, then move on to simple modeling like in the video I linked before. When you’ve learned the basics of modeling, try modeling some other basic stuff, and when that gets easier, move on to more advanced things. An advanced model isn’t really any different to a simpler model, it just involves more vertices/edges/faces. All the same tools and techniques apply, extruding, subdividing, ring cuts, moving vertices, etc.

Please remember, on this forum you’re talking to human beings, not LLMs, these are people trying to help you, and sometimes that means they won’t be as sycophantic as the LLMs you are used to speaking to Okidoki is correct that ultimately, all learning happens within. Just like with weightlifting, I could tell you how and what to lift, but ultimately, you would have to lift those weights yourself for any benefit. If you do want hands on personal training, expect to pay for it, but they are going to tell you the same hotkeys and same techniques as any tutorial

So, these are generally anxious thoughts you could apply to anything, and getting over them is a lifelong personal journey for everyone. But just having the questions with no answers produces more anxiety, so try to fill in some answers.

  1. Then you’ll figure out how to fix it, probably by making a post on this forum and asking for help with the specific problem.
  2. This is complete nonsense. I’ve been doing 3d for almost twenty two years at this point, and I don’t have the whole topic studied. There is always more to learn, In 40+ years if I’m still alive, I’ll still be learning. Don’t sweat it. The moment you think you know everything, is when you should be very concerned about what your ego is hiding from you. Again, this is art, not history. You don’t study the topic, you practice the topic, and you largely move intuitively.
  3. What if? nobody can tell you the meaning of life. At face value, unless you’ve been raised in a religion, we’re just on a rock, born and waiting to die with no greater purpose to be fulfilled. So in your short time on the rock, do what makes you happy, because what else are ya gonna do?

Now, maybe that last answer isn’t for you, but that’s not a question that was really for me or anyone else on the forum. What you do with your life is a deeply personal thing for everyone, and finding that answer is an individual journey. It might be worth examining why you’re undertaking this. It currently sounds like you are only interested in the end result or product, which doesn’t bode well for getting there. Art should be a pleasurable experience, and if you can’t find that in learning or practicing 3d, maybe drawing, painting, or singing or dancing or some other artistic expression is more your speed?

Replying briefly to the overall thought on that: using AI as a teacher is not a good idea, at all.

AI Chatbots do not know how to use blender. Some things they suggest might be correct, many are outdated, others are misleading, and some will be completely made up false information.

Everyone that has learned to use blender prior to the past 18 to 24 months, has done so without using AI at all. I suggest you do it the way we did it – start looking at the manual, start looking at YouTube videos, and start reading everything you can on a topic that you’re interested in.

I don’t even know what to say?!

It turns out that I shouldn’t think about it and study the blender on my own, and it’s best to model it first and then think about the rest?!

I’m 15 years old, and I worry all the time. I try to appear and act like adults, I try to deal with problems like an adult, but nothing works out for me…

I’ve always been afraid of doing something wrong. I was afraid to start because I thought it was for nothing…

I do not know, maybe I am stupid and do not understand something, or maybe you are explaining it to me too incomprehensibly…

I constantly watch a lot of cool anime, I get inspired and I have a desire to do the same, but when I sit for so long and can’t do anything, it becomes very insulting and painful…

I want to learn the blender! I want to go on YouTube!

I think you may be underestimating how much time, practice and effort it takes to be able to create anime in a 3-D program.

If you just want to download some model and render it and smile, then go onto a different hobby – this can be done in a matter of hours with very little effort.

If you want to build your own characters and your own worlds … your own scenes from your imagination, this progress will be measured in years. I’m not implying that you cannot do this, by the way, but I think you need to know the reality of how this goes before you start criticizing yourself for being too stupid or too slow to pick up on how it’s done.

Making anime is the dream of my whole life!!! I’m not going to be some kind of sketchbook.

I want to create a system with which I can safely make anime For YouTube!!!

I think that everything can be achieved if you want to, there is nothing unrealistic!

If I want to make anime in the style of gametoons/one piece, then I can do it!

I would expect something normal from you…

You’re just always getting tangled up in this blender web.
