Magic Squid

Animated version here on Instagram

Hi everyone,

New project as a collaboration with street artist Toska
based on his drawing:

I really recommend that you check the animated version. The animation is not yet great, but it’s still quite fun to see the little thing moving.

That’s my first attempt at non photo realistic rendering, and I’m pretty happy. Freestyle got me some headache though…

Some behind the scenes at different stages of the process

Trying cell shading

Subsurf workflow

More tentacles

Color input and workbench rendering

Procedural normal maps for details

Colors! And painting effect derived from the Nodevember 2021 watercolor material by @Gemn

Real-time, woohoo! And another angle, so you can see it actually works in 3D
Missing the real-time Freestyle…

Getting all bloody nerdy on mapping controls through drivers and IK and bone constraints and also - in which direction should I move this cursor again? Noooo, don’t touch this one!
I tried to keep things clean on the material side with a node group for the color palette and one for the main toon shading, accepting either a plain color or 2 colors paired with procedural bump maps and a color mask.

The animation itself still has a long way to go I think. The rigging is OK I believe, but the movement could use a lot more love.
