OK - my first head model after a CGCookie tutorial. And it’s me, cause nobody else wanted to look like crap Whoever I asked “nooooo, that’s weird”, “no, I don’t wanna look like that, like surgery”… pah.
The ears still suck, cause the tut hasn’t arrived there yet, don’t comment on the “Texture”, please, I know the texture and lighting is really bad. That’s how far I got after 1.5 months of Blender.
Now I just need to figure out how to get the eyebrows and the beard on straight and I’m good… or say, better
Btw.: I’ve posted a thread about that here - maybe someone has an idea?
Thanks! In real I look like my Avathar I’ll post a reference pic later if I manage to take a decent one with my cellphone. I already updated the model’s shape but I’m not gonna post it until the beard and eyebrows are on so in case you manage to suppress all that excitement, be prepared for some waiting time
OK, as others are posting their faces on here, I have a followup to that problem case of mine being myself
This time I won`t post a bad render (cause I can’t render or light properly) but a screenshot. Still no beard/eyebrows and old version of ears, these will follow in a few days!
Btw.: putting hair on this thing using particles was just the weirdest thing ever… I think I’ll have to do this with textures, which is gonna take me a while. I ordered this book to learn from and I hope I’ll manage to make myself as pretty as the lady on the cover
Edit: my mouth IS that flat, before anybody complains I I don’t wear lipstick! I wouldn’t even if I wanted to be pretty! And the ears SUCK, yes!
Glad to see someone else modeling a human head, as it is one of the harder things to do while getting into 3d. Eventually it should be a breeze though.(so I’ve heard)
I do have a couple crits however and am only pointing them out to help you in the long run:
The bridge of the nose meets the eyes should have a much smoother transition. I would also keep the area around the eye a lot smoother, as wrinkles are much easier to put in once you have the basic topology of the region down.
The head is way to blocky. The top of your head all the way down to the bottom of your neck should be much smoother. The bumps and jaggedness in your model looks too unrealistic.
Relax the lips, it looks as though you are stretching them out.
Remember any unatural look to the human face can easily be detected since we see them all day, everyday; and SMOOTH is your friend. Select a couple faces and hit W + Smooth if you want to smooth the area up - it has saved me a bunch.
I’m also sure you will be working on that ear soon so I didn’t bother to point it out!
Will be looking forward to more, and will be here if you need some help…
Hi there!
Thanks a lot for your input
I know this is far from perfect, but I’m quite convinced it actually will work out. The problem is the missing beard and eyebrows and the nasty skin, and the extreme asymmetry of my face which I’m gonna fix after the moirror mod is applied, so everybody can tell me something’s wrong with it
put “I think” in front of any answer now - it’s somethimes hard to judge your own work.
ad 1) the transition is, according to my reference, already smoother than the original.
ad 2) just look at the original and CALL ME A BLOCKHEAD, go on
ad 3) I think they come very close - this is probably the useless material index I placed.
To verify what I say, I post my picture here. So whoever wants to even out those bumps - here you go
I also posted wires for you to see!
Thanks a lot again and I hope to read further critique to help me see reality
:)Your Cg head could be made out to be 60 years old down to 49 ha ha wicked tho but when I saw your references a lot younger very similar, I am working on some Topology.
Pull in the following verts circled in black and allow your geometry to follow the white path I’ve drawn out. Would help your model look a little smoother.
@navsart: OK, you got point, as I’ve already chosen the nicer half of my face to model, I might as well get rid of the blocks Just go ahead and bash me (seriously!!) - I can take it and I WANT it, I’m all against politically correct critique. Who’s got point has got point, and as my reference is up there’s no excuse! I want to become as good as possible, and this is not gonna happen through stroking my ego
@kbot: thanks - that really kicks my butt Hopefully I’ll be able at some point to contribute something to Open World Film - that seems to be fun!! Sadly I just started in January and I suck pretty much. I make too many mistakes. But eventually this is improving!
@ionee & all in general: I still have to learn proper lighting. I also ordered this book from Ballistic Publishing so I can maybe make something really realistic. So I don’t wanna waste space here again by a sucky render like the one below. I wanna come up with something GOOD that I can personally back. So give me a little time, I’ll just post modelling screenshots in the meanwhile!
Edit: I also ordered the Creature Factory from the Blender shop. I wanna make nasty stuff too. Maybe someone wants to participate in sort of an “Open Creature Workshop” in the future…
Thanks everybody for pitching in their 50ct! I really appreciate your help and/or opinion!
Nice work so far, but the mouth is a problem area as I see it. You’ve made a common mistake which is to exaggerate the curvature of the lips back towards the ears. As a result they seem sort of pointed at the front. A lot of people do this (I used to :P), because it looks superficially like you are matching the reference, when infact you aren’t. Your edgeloops are quite evenly spaced from the side view whereas in fact they should be getting closer together as you approach the front of the face - the edge of the silhouette as it were. Here’s a quick image to illustrate what I mean.
Edit: Just thought of something else - enouragement! Your modelling looks good, so don’t be afraid to deviate from you refererence if you feel you know better. A photo cant capture every aspect of the form of a persons face, and especially in the convoluted areas such as the ears, the mouth, and the sides of the nostrils, trying to stick to reference too rigourously can cloud your thinking and slow you down. Your brain is programmed to analyse faces, so trust it and dont be afraid to change something you dont feel looks right!
@ben: that sounds like some GOOD advice. I now realize - I truly have had this problem much more in the beginning, when my whole face looked like a wedge, just as you illustrated it. I evened it out somewhat, made the cheeks fuller and the chin, which were all totally flat.
exaggerate the curvature of the lips back towards the ears
I don’t fully understand the meaning of this, but I guess it is connected to everything above and will disappear once the edgeloops in side vew are reordered. That actually sounds pretty logical. I figure this is probably a typical beginner’s mistake - the urge to make the space between loops in side view equal to front view.
Which was very kind of you! That’s why this community rocks.
I think I’ll post an update this Saturday, because work will keep me from Blending til then. Hope to get more feedback from you guys
I’m not really in much of a position to critique, based on my modeling, but in the wires that you posted, the edge loops that run along the side of the head look pretty flat. From the front view, the top of the head looks a little “rugby ball” shaped wheras in your front view reference pic the top of the head is more “football shaped”. It seems to me that curving the edge loops from the side view might pull up the sides a little when looking from the front view giving it a more rounded look as in the reference.
Much better than I could do after a couple of months. You seem to have a pretty good grasp of the usage of loops. Keep going.
the stupid thing about this: my head actually features sort of a “ridge” that is only visible in a certain angle. Now my references were all taken in a haste and the reference used isn’t the one I posted So I’m a bit unsure myself, but I think it pretty much hits the spot AS FAR AS I CAN JUDGE :o
I cheated a bit finishing the head because the tutorial parts weren’t all available yet, so it might well be the structure isn’t correct. That’s why I’m here asking you guys to kick me in the nads. Seriously
lol SOMETHING must have gone wrong here, so I’ll really have to get cracking on this now that I’ve attracted some attention… :o
I cannot yet texture anything but procedural on the most primitive level - but I’ve ordered THE book, then I’ll suck on it for a while and hopefully it’ll turn out satisfactory
OK, another update. Reference was posted earlier.
I’m slowly starting to get what people are trying to tell me since weeks lol
All I can say: thank you guys for your feedback! PLUS in advance, for this post!
And I really hope that face texturing book is gonna make it here UNDER 3 weeks from Australia. [“hidden” advertisement]Otherwise I’ll have start with the Creature Factory from the Blender e-shop, or maybe Kernon’s Blendern00b DVD will arrive before that one… [/“hidden” advertisement]OK, whatever
