New character rig for blender: Little_fella

Nice movie, but you started another thread, so I’ll comment on it over there… in fact I already did :stuck_out_tongue:

here’s what I’ve been using the little fella for:

the story behind this is that someone from work is going to move to another country to work in some high position there.
This idea kinda popped into my head so I made an image out of it.
thanks to kroni for sharing his grass settings:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=106609

I like to call this image done, well, I’ll most likely add some directions on the signpost, but maybe I won’t, he’s reading it from the front anyway…
One Issue I did encounter which strikes me as odd, is that the resolution at which you render affects how dense the grass becomes:

These are the exact same scene, only rendered at different resolutions… Notice the difference? the grass looks better in the 800x600 version because it is less sharp, and not so thin so it exposes the floor.
Might work on that, but I think I’ll return to simple animations with the rig instead.

@FreakyDude, nice concept, I like it!
What I would add is some texture to the ground he walks, now to me the ground doesn’t look to be a sand nor something else, maybe just some bump setting, to be a little bit more relief. Maybe worth to try.

Cheers!

Well, that picture is kinda finished, I ment to go for that style.

Anyway, update!
Small but very annoying bug found in the rig during the blenderconference.
Blenderconference was fun, saw lots of cool stuff and fun people there, heh, yeah that was fun…

Thanks Nathan for helping me notice the bug.
D’OH!

EDIT:
see first post
/EDIT

updated on the old mirror:
http://tieleman.m.googlepages.com/home

I’ll send it to Anton soon, his link will be updated shortly too I guess.

I might make an alternative version too with a different look on the controlls, maybe even a few less of them. I had a little talk with Daniel Martinez Lara from pepeland, about how he prefers to control his rigs, and I kinda liked that approach. will see if I can cook up something that work a little similar to that…

@FreakyDude, no need to send it, got it from the above link and I put it on my site as well ----> http://www.renderplace.com/blenderfiles/Little_fella_03.blend

-AntonG

Ehm, yes that’s cool… I eehm, forgot to send you, I accidently closed firefox before sending and well,… sorry…

@FreakyDude, no problem … you may update the first page now, where my link points to old 2 version although the name shows to be 3 version.

-AntonG

updated… Nathan talked me into trying svn versions next and the bone heat stuff, gonna read up on that a little bit this week…

good times.

FreakyDude,

Is it possible to change the color of the armature’s helper objects so that one side is, say blue and the other is red. This will help seeing the right and left sides of the rig more clearly when you are selecting them.

Now that’s a nice idea.
Is possible, will change this later today I think. during lunch or otherwise when I’m back at home. I’ll have another small tweak or two that I’ve come to use more often…
Thanks for the crits on my animation as well, I’ll work on it later this week.

I’ll upload the new file once it’s done.

New links, old links are invalid now, will update first post soon:

@FreakyDude, my mirror is updated as well —> http://www.renderplace.com/blenderfiles/Little_fella_05.blend

I like new visuals, using different colors for left/right side is very good idea.

-AntonG

FreakyDude,

The object’s color change looks great, I especially like how you made the objects open too, they’re much easier to see like that.

Two changes I made

I made the eyebone the child of the head instead of the master bone. This way, it will always be in front of the head, you can still key it for eye direction, .It will always be in relation to the head and it reduces additional keying for the eyes.

I added a facial animation screen. Bassam told me about this at the SIGGRAPH. You have two windows, in the left window is your normal window view, the right is a camera view , which is locked.

add a camera in front of the facial_bone_master. Parent the new camera to it, next select the new camera, and the n press Control num pad 0, (On dell lap top it’s CTRL plus the function key Fn plus Num Pad 0.

Right click and save

@Room335, the link to your file is correct?

-AntonG

Link doesn’t work for me either, I’ll try out those new things you described, and i think I’ll update the file later today. I found a few other things as well, be it minor, that I could change.
One other question you might know:
how do you convert an IK pose to an FK one? that’s the biggest issue I’ve had with IK so far. what if I IK a motion, and want to continu with FK from that certain pose? sliding the IK back makes the arm jump back, and setting the cursor at the elbow and rotating along that doesn’t work either. Maybe this should go under animation…

@FreakyDude, I asked Bassam similar question regarding usage of FK/IK … you might check here —> http://freefactory.org/posts/candy-for-everyone#comment-2855

-AntonG

Sorry guys, I’m not sure what the link issue is.

It worked for me. Did you right click on it and select save file?

yes, but it seems like the file is not there, here is the content:

yes we did that, well I did.
I did get to download a file, but it was 0kb and wasn’t a valid .blend file.
I’ll look those things up anyway. Going to add some more cosmetic things to the file I think.

I don’t think that’s it. I think he means the IK driver instead of the copy rotation driver by the way, but I have no problems switching between FK/IK
I have prolems with the arm jumping back to it’s initial state (rest mode) once I disable IK.
Suppose I want to do an IK move and then “lock it” and continu in FK, and maybe, just maybe switch back again later. How would I do that?
