New Forum Design

Woo hoo! Nice. A bit harder to read but maybe I’ll get used to it. The inserted ads are OK with me, maybe more people will support the cause here with a click every now and then. Maybe if enough support was given we could eventually have a few different site themes to choose from in our preferences. That would be somekinda’ cool.

hey timmothy, i hate to be a pain in the ass, but whats your plans with sago’s smilies? just somthing i was really looking forward to,

I’m sorry to say, but things have went from bad, to worse.

As some have already stated, the whole thing seems to “flow” a bit too much. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the “runny eggs” design (colors I can get used to), but ads placement inbetween posts? That’s just wrong.

Put the ads either on the top or bottom of the thread (I don’t understand what you mean by: “there is no room”, just extend the page and make room).

Putting in some more distinct borders or colors to diffirentiate posts is almost a necessity here (one that is especially apperent at the reply page).

It would have been nice, if we as a community had a vote on the theme. We didn’t, did we?

PS: My eyes hurt. (too bright)

It looks alright, but is there any chance of centering the thread posts? Kinda strange having everything on the left side while the right is completely empty. <edit> Sorry, I have to criticize further :frowning:

The titles of the forums that are written vertically are making my neck sore. It also doesn’t seem other than that orange rectangle there aren’t any “blender” associated colours anywhere. In fact if I didn’t know this was elYsiun, I wouldn’t of guessed that it had anything to do wtih blender just from the look alone. I think there may also be some images missing in the navigation bar at the top, or at least it seems like that to me.

There does not seem to be any ‘depth’ to the site either, it seems completely flat, which I think is why people are saying that it is “blending together”.

I’m not sure about the general consensus but it doesn’t appeal to me very much to be completely honest.

A lot of work went into it, and I would still like to say thankyou and congratulations for bringing it to life.

Mystery

Errr - no Blender logo? Anywhere?

The thing thats bothering me the most is, eg in Support section, if a thread had several post replies, u wouldnt bother looking at it, because the problem would have been solved already probably.
But if a thread had 0 replies, then posting would be essential.

Also i sort of navigated through thread with one eye on thread views and post replys, knowing, if a thread had many replies it would be (mostly) very promissing to look at.

now without post count or view count, you have to compare thread starter name with last post poster name, or keep youre mouse over the date for a second, which is annoying to do with 20 or so topics on one page…
Then i noticed while the small count that pops up is only about 50 pixels wide, and seeing all that white space between thread title and last post, make me wonder why there shouldnt be any room for post count thread count view count.

just my opinion … great design otherwise, finally got it done!

greetz

man this is nice

ok im on my other comp now and i see the ads…it’s as radscientist said, firefox 2.0 has an ad-blocker. nothing wrong with ads if you cant see them!

oh and i have to agree with AndyD - it doesnt seem like it’s a blender thing enough…not like the last one was better at that.

yhaaaa… kickass…

there is two things I would do:
-center the whole thing
-make more lines to separate things.

otherwise it looks really smooth and nice

There is not really enough space to put the post views + count back.
Then something was awry in the design process. The workflow should have been - “What has to fit? How do we fit it?” not “Here’s a nice design, see what fits in”

I have to agree with TheAmiMan on the usefulness of the post-count. I often visit the support forums and will seek out questions with zero response to see if I can help. I’m not likely to drag my mouse over every last reply to read the post report.

The link text thing is looking really dodgy. Sometimes it shows up bold, sometimes not. Links applied within text like this in old threads may no longer be visible or may just look like bold type, while bolded type might look like links. Links should look like links, imho and we shouldn’t have to accidentally mouse-over something to realise it’s a link (what webpagesthatsuck.com calls “mystery meat navigation”) EDIT: Interestingly on Safari they all show up bright purple)

Sorry, but it’s already starting to look like it was designed for looks not content or usability. Maybe time will prove us wrong.

I’m concerned the “Similar Threads” feature will result in a lot of very old posts being dragged back from the dead. This page has links to five other pages - one from August this year, three from 2003 and one from 2002! Did we always have this feature and I just never noticed it?

Bugger, I’m sounding like an ungrateful bastard. I really don’t mean to be.

On a different note: What do the orange and green people next to our user names mean?

I have a wide screen monitor. Is there anyway to set up the site so that it will center on my monitor (1680 X 1050)? Everything is over to the left.

Sincerely, xn

It looks good, but some things like the signatures and the buttons at the top don’t stand out all that well. However, I think it’s an improvement over the other one, and the icons are much better:D

Agreed. Forum devs, please center the design. I’m using a wide-screen monitor and the forum only takes up the left 1/2 of the screen!

There does not seem to be any ‘depth’ to the site either, it seems completely flat, which I think is why people are saying that it is “blending together”.
Yes.

I’m not sure about the general consensus but it doesn’t appeal to me very much to be completely honest.
Agreed.

I still wonder what was wrong with the original Elysiun forum design? That design was easily 10x better than this. Sorrry to have to complain, but as great as Blender is, this forum design certainly doesn’t reflect it.

I hate to be so frank, but this new theme looks downright awful. It’s incredibly, blindingly white – no contrast at all. I don’t know what’s up with the em-width orange lines on the left of the page between each post, but if they’re supposed to be separators, they’re pretty bad. The insane amount of header space also looks bad; it’s empty and serves no purpose. If there were extra space for an ad, and only extra space for an ad, that would be different, but right now the design just looks amateur.

Bright gray-on-white text for the headers may be subtle, but impossible to read. Also, why is the text so small?

I just noticed these little tiny vertical tabs that say “NEWS” and “FEATURES”. Why are they there?

Sorry guys, but after months of redesign, I expected something at least as good as the default vBulletin theme.

forum will not take any more space on your screen depending where it’s positioned. it’s fixed size anyways.

I agree that the Replies number is vital to the forum. The views is not needed, but the Replies. . . Please Please Please figure out a way to put those back.
The white makes all the avatars not look as good. I Think it’s because they are small and so all the white just drowns them out and they look like dark little splotches (relatively). Maybe a neutral box (grey, blue,…) around the avatar area would fix it.
It is a bit awkward to have adds in the posts, but well whatever.
I think the Vbulletin was much better than the elsiun design, and I’m hoping this will be developed to be the best of all. Thank for your work

[edit] And the link thing…That is a huge issue. Having a link just look like bold is just not good.

IMO there should be more highlights (like cgtalk frontpage) in the header

Also, it would be nice if we still had the hit counter for threads.

I agree with most criticism here.
Make posts distinct with a border, center everything, making the links look like links, post count (in threads) and less bright colors (just a bit).
It’s not that I don’t like it, but nothing’s perfect, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

Cheers

Oh my god! It got even brighter!
The thread view lacks contrast for me. :frowning: I can hardly make out where one post ends and the next starts. And I have trouble distinguishing between a bold text and a link.

Well it is pretty and flashy and all. But I can’t say I’m overly happy about the choice of a uber bright theme over a darker one - which imho would have been better for displaying artworks. Still I can appreciate the effort, so kudos to everyone involved.

edit: wow, I only just noticed the lack of reply counts in the list view. That is not going to help the generous folk around here in answering support-forum questions. :frowning:
