Realistic Atmosphere In Cycles

I didnt even new it worked with eevee by now

You are very wellcome

Hi,
I’m am trying out blender to see if it could be the tool for me going forward. While browsing through a few tutorials I came across this one and I have to say it looks stunning. I wanted to try to follow the steps in your video and using the shaders that you provided in the description. Everything workes fine except that my atmosphere is completely transparent. There is no colour or anything other that is visible. I am using Blender 2.82 and I have made sure that I connected the AtmoShader_V3 to the volume pin of the Material output.

I took a screen shot of the nodes and I rendered out what it looks like at the moment

Ok I am not exactly shure if this will solve your problem, but in the Demo Scene the Atmosphere is a Cube. Maybe try adding a cube with the same dimensions and see if that works.

@DevilFX Did you add ozone layer absorption? If I understand your nodes correctly you haven“t right? I“ve recently seen a really cool video from Terragen about that it seems to really make a difference.

Ooo, nice. Legit and pretty. Is it Earth?

oh hey sorry didnt check the chat for a while… Could be a problem with the changing vectormath in blender 2.81 and 2.82 but im currently working on a V4 which will work better and now uses the correct barimetric formula and then also make a new video about it!

actually working on a new version which will include that too

try applying all scales!

I can’t wait to see it
Btw. I tried to add a layer city light layer using an image texture node together with a colour ramp into a mix node into a mix shader (fac), your earth texture into the mix shader (shader 1), Emitter into mix shader (shader 2) to make the light layer show in the dark area. This did not work with cycles, but if I deactivate the atmo and cloud layers then it works in Eevee. I am new to blender so there might be an obvious issue with using certain nodes in cycles and others in Eevee. Is there some nodes that I will not be able to use when using cycles to render? and some nodes I cant use for Eevee?
I can’t use Eevee to render it because it doesn’t seem to like the cloud and atmo layer and from the different earths that I’ve made I just like the finished result of the cycles render a lot better. There is something with it that makes it look more photorealistic.

Sorry, but I’m pretty new to Blender so I don’t know what scales is. I’ll have a look if I can figure it out this evening

Well i dont really know what exactly you are doing but yes eevee and cycles nodes behave very different in many cases!

just look into the video there is a step showing you how to apply the scales or at least copy them to the node

same here … in what part of the video

Shader V4 Comming! This time with barometric formula to calculate the density of air, completly new Mie Scattering, new Chappuis Absorption and an option for ozone glow on the dark side of the planet!
This will be big

This is rendered with 128 samples and denoiser and took about 6 minutes to render on a 1080.

Thank you,

can you make a new tutorial this time with the Shader V4 and the latest version of Blender? It would be useful for a lot of people here and in general on youtube.

Hi Devil.

I hope you see this reponse, and hope it’s okay that i open a old thread like this.

But have followed and tried you’r epic shader, and it’s some really epic looking results.
But when i’m trying it, it renders for at least an hour running on a 1080 on a SSD, for only one image.

I more or less opned your V3 and tried to render, have any sugguestions or am i doing anything wrong?

Wow. I remember a few years ago fighting with shaders, maps, fresnel effects, and cheap tricks trying to create a realistic atmosphere but getting nowhere and just about when I thought about trying for the 5th time, here you are with an incredible looking free shader…and about to release a new version too!

I would seriously like to know how on earth ( sorry, pun intended :stuck_out_tongue: ) you made this.
Honestly, I think it’s the best looking one i’ve ever seen!
I checked your nodes a little and simply cannot understand how they are translating the math behind Mie scattering, Rayleigh scattering etc.
Sorry for the enthusiasm but i’m just too curious. I hope to be as good as you one day haha!

P.S. When do you think V4 will be ready?
