Realistic Spark Mandrill

Hello everyone,

here is another Character I created for my fourth episode of my short film series “MAVERICKS”. It is based on one of the eight boss characters from the 90s Video Game “Mega Man X” called “Spark Mandrill”.
He is an electrical creature, that can shoot ball lightnings, so I wanted to make sure that his appearance reflected this.

Final render:

Clay render:

Viewport render:

Hero Shot from the short film.

You can watch his episode here:

Here is a turntable animation of him being dismantled to see his inner workings:

And here is a short “making-of” of his short film:

I have also a Patreon where you can support me, so I can keep making those short films

Cheers :v:

Very impressive work here. The detail in your modeling and your textures is so good!

Amazing work! Love the artistic license you took making it realistic materials and lighting look so cool, how do you twist cables like that over other cables? is it a screw modifier combined with a curve modifier? the animations are very impressive too! you just got a new follower!

Thank you!!! Yeah, it was quite some work but also I used a lot of kitbashing which helped a ton. Modeling everything from scratch would have been a nightmare

Thanks a lot!!!

I guess you mean the big cables?
These are modeled like that. So the inner cable and the three small cables going around that are one object. But just a small part.

Then I used the simple deform modifier to bend it so that beginning and end line up.

Then used array to repeat them.

And then they just follow a curve

Hope that helps :v:

Cool! thanks for the insights, couldn´t be more clear! did you use substance or just plain blender with procedurals? materials look great too!

Thanks!

Most of my textures are procedural. I’m too lazy to create custom ones for each part

Once I created one cool Metal shader and over time I enhanced it, with procedural edge wear etc. and now I’m using it everywhere

But for key parts that are more in focus, I use custom textures or I use photos I took somewhere in my hometown as a basis.
Construction sites are a goldmine for industrial looking textures

Great! i kinda was more on the procedural side because i´m a little familiar with the patterns the noise makes, but it looks so good i thought it could be hand painted! Thanks again!

I love all the detail, and the orange lights inside that you could see better with the clay render, maybe you could make those brighter so you could see it in the final render? Just a thought. Also, just curious, how long did that take to make?

Good lord! This is so good!! What an amazing work you did! I was trying to find something better than that to say here, but my words just gone away… Really impressive!

Thanks a lot!
Yeah that was a deliberate choice.
I had it brighter at one point but it was over glowing the rest of the lights and was kinda distracting.
It’s a fine line to go
In the end it just needs to show that he has some form of energy or “life” inside him.

How long is a tough question as I’m not really tracking my time. But I would say maybe a week or 10 days.

You’re too kind!
Thank you!!! :blue_heart:

wow, thats amazingly quick! do you have any tips if you have only around an hour a day to work and you want to undertake a large project, workflow suggestions, anything?
