Rigid body constraint: Motor and Hinge tutorials?

Hi everyone.

I’m having trouble finding any 2.8 based tutorials for Motors and Hinges. I’m moving from C4D to Blender and have experience with Dynamics in C4D. I’m looking to create some clockwork toy animations and Dynamics lends itself to this style of animation. Does anyone have any recommendations for tutorials? Google doesn’t seem to help - but I may be asking the wrong question.

Many thanks.

I have just been looking into this. I found one which seems to deal with hinges in 2.8: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGixhR9u2gc

There is another guy who has a bunch of tutorials for 2.7 along with downloadable sample files. However, following the one at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PYQsI2WFMDU doesn’t work for me because I was not able to pick an object up and affect any other bodies with it. If possible I’d like someone to try doing that so we know whether that is now handled differently.

Many thanks for your reply.

Yes, my searches had led me to the two youtube videos you cite.

I’m making good progress in learning about rigid body constraints thanks to the Blender Sensei video. I’ve not found it too difficult even though he’s using 2.7.

I also found the following thread that features a blender file with a working motor set-up which I’ve been using for reference.

With reference to your statement…

doesn’t work for me because I was not able to pick an object up and affect any other bodies with it. If possible I’d like someone to try doing that so we know whether that is now handled differently.

I had no problems in picking up an object and affecting the other bodies with it - as shown in the video. Note that I remade all of the examples myself in 2.8. I didn’t have access to the sample files he references in his video.

Make sure you have the ‘Animated’ checkbox ticked so the object will interact with the other objects.
