RLNOS | WIP documentation

Every project I have ever started in Blender has been the source of hyperfocus from start to finish, except one; a project I have lovingly named “RLNOS”.

It’s a project I have wanted to make ever since my first weeks of learning Blender, but for some reason every time I start working on it I immediately lose motivation.

So this thread is my final attempt at trying to force myself to complete it by documenting as much of it as I can.

Previous experiments/attempts

An attempt at creating some sort of style for the project, a mix between NPR and PBR

The kind of look I am currently having in mind

Another attempt at creating the project style, mor in line with my current idea for it

Some asset tests

Big boost pad

Small boost pad

Boost trail

Quick explosion experiment

Hit effect experiment

Speed trails

Animation test (the scene was originally made during a render challenge unrelated to the project)

Some animatics

[Boost pickup slowmo]

Animation/Sound test before I had decided to switch to NPR

Scene progress

To be continued!

Messing around with materials as I am still trying to figure out what exact style I want to go for

After yesterdays result (Frocky the rocky frog | Project breakdown) I feel like I might be on the right track so now I’m trying to develop a style with those underlying ideas to be used on cars

First interesting idea for the day: Edge Length for line details

I kind of want to keep most of the car materials procedural with only a few ready-made textures for things like decals so this idea would help add some extra details!

Black line art with Edge Length combined with white highlights with Face Corner Angle gives a nice mix I think
