This time... Cars with characters! - "COURAGE" by Daniel Vesterbaek

why not try render regions, so say cut it into 2 or 4 parts. Than stitch them backup again later

Stunning render man! DIdnt new this story, i did know Arton Senna and remember seeing it on the news. I wasnt an F1 fan though.

I noticed 2 things which catched my eyes. The left car has really a lot of scratches, perhaps to much. But that is personal taste i guess. I also feel it has scratches at places which were almost impossible for this incident.

The other thing, perhaps its just me, is the left legg of Senna. The one which is raised and angled. Somehow the part where the folds are happening look a bit weird. To much of an “inward” hole perhaps??

Other then that its stunning scene, so much detail. Man al that debris, is that manual placed? its all these small extra’s which makes this shot so amazing !!!

Ps big props making such a stunning scene that fast. I know that doing stuff after work an be quite demanding. Quite baffled you made this scene in quite a short time

Amazing work!! :+1:

Nice work Daniel, I’m no F1or modeling expert, I think an improvement that might add some tension is a marshal or two waving yellow or red flags at the cars that will be exiting the corner liked the car that’s blurred, the only logical critique I could have is all the bits of car would be behind the lead car. though not knowing how the incident occurred, I could be totally off. but great subject

Nice to know, I’m so glad you like those parts. The heat distortion was based on the trick showed by CG Geek in this youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UacrK-wngw&t=604s

CG Cookie.

Do you know if the car he was using in 1992 was that the MP4/6?

I think he was driving MP4/7A.

I am pretty sure you must have seen this movie (just came to recommend that):

I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!

Interesting idea! I think it will still load in all the geometry though and use up the vRam

Thank you rombout!! So glad you like it.
Yeah, true. The scratches are a bit overdone - I tried to dial it down, but it very quickly lost the very banged up look, so I kept them even though some were in unrealistic places - I could have spent more time refining though.

Hahah, yeah, Senna’s legs were too thick so I used a negative displace modifier on them and it screwed the geometry up a bit, heheh…

No, no, the debris are random parts that I dublicated from the car and then some very tiny pyrimid shapes (very low poly) with the car paint on them scattered over the road using a particle system  Few of the big objects were placed by hand though.

Hey KenD!! Thanks for the feedback. This post kind of turned into a finished project at some point, so I don’t think I will spend more time changing things now, but your suggestions are really really good! I love the idea about the flags. And the debris on the ground should maybe only be behind the car. However, I kinda imagined the car was “thrown” from the barrier back onto the road and the debris would spread all over the place - So that’s why they are so scattered. Anyway, thanks a lot for the comment!

Arh, yeah, I actually meant the guy from Remington Graphics, but I confused him with the CG Geek - But yeah, CG cookie’s channel, heheh.

Okay, thanks, I wasn’t sure. No, actually haven’t seen that one. I will definitely check it out. A friend of mine also just recommended it on Facebook to me. Thanks! :))

Haha!
Again congrats for this amazing job. The image is very powerful and the attention to detail is flaming good.
I just did a mistake a mistake by describing the scene. The old chicane was left right
but there was a very light right corner before it.

There are addons for this, I also made a script for Photoshop which will automatically stitch it back to a proper image. Let me know if you want it

Thanks man!
Heheh, aaarh, okay. Would have been cool to get these details correct and get it closer to the real thing. But I never thought about that it was important to get these things right - because people wouldn’t notice I thought, heheh… Now I know they will. Thanks for the info about it.

Hmm, interesting - Would be cool to check it out. Haven’t got the time for it right now though :frowning:
I just still don’t get what the performance benefit from rendering only some pixels of the viewport. It still uses the same vRam and in the end after having rendered the 4 parts you have spent just as much time rendering than if you just rendered everything together. Or am I missing the point of it? heheh…

Haha yes. But don’t worry it’s a magnificent work anyway.
Sometimes we arrange a bit reality to get a better story to tell.
That’s what matters in the end

Really nice work! congrats! ( :

Well say you want to render an image at 4000x4000 pixels. But your gpu isn’t powerful enough for this, then there is region rendering to the rescue. You will be able to render the image in a grrid manner, so for example 2x2 grid. Now that image will be render in 4 parts at 2000x2000 pixels, this will probably fit. Then you stitch t uh e image back together again and you got a full 4000x4000 image.

You could also do bigger renders if you need to. So perhaps 16000x16000 pixels. That would be an 8x8 grid.

Hope this is more clear now

On some engines it will also speed up rendering. But I’m not sure this is also the case with cycles
