V-Ray/Blender

Guys, where can I download demo of VRay? (can somebody e-mail it to me please at motorsepatgmaildotcom) Thank you.

on the chaos group site, then download maya version and change your computer date…
Hpe that help

So let’s recap a bit

  1. Go to chaosgroup’s website and select the “support” option:
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/support/
  2. Register/create an account.
    http://www.chaosgroup.com/siteman/register.php
    3.Once registered, log in.
4.In your profile options (private section), select the tab “v-ray builds”
  3. Download the maya85 demo, select architecture (x86/x64)
  4. Create a folder at C: call it “vray”, inside of it create 2 subfolders called “maya85” and inside of it a folder called “plugins”, so the folder structure ends up like this: “C:\vray\maya85\plugins”
7.Run the installer, once it asks for your maya folder, set its path to the “maya85” (“C:\vray\maya85”) created folder, and when it asks for the plugins folder set the path to “C:\vray\maya85\plugins”. Let the rest of the process run by default.
8.Everything is ready, now change your system’s date to “october 2007”
8a. Copy Andrey’s python script to blender’s “scripts” folder:
    http://blender.lugr.ru/files/vrayExport_0.9.1.py
9.Launch blender, open Andrey’s Cornell scene for a test.
    http://upload.blenderbg.com/cornellbox.blend.7z
  5. From blender’s “render” menu, select “v-ray/blender”, change the render size to 600x450 (maximum allowed by the demo).
11.In Andrey’s Vray Script UI, select the “system” button, and in the “Renderer” field, click on the … dots and look for the “vray.exe” executable. It should be located at: “C:\Vray\Maya85\plugins\bin”, select “save” to remember its location (no need to set an environment variable/path for it anymore).
  6. click on v-ray’s “Export Meshes” button, prior to rendering your scene (crucial step!)
  7. click on v-ray’s “render” button (lower left corner). Enjoy the show!

You can now check how Andrey setup things in his scene: materials, lights, cameras, etc.

My dreams become reality  Thank you!

Is there a way to use the FREE version of V-Ray? I downloaded the free version but then when I install it, I don’t see any .exe files, only some .dll files… I’d rather not mess with a time-limited demo if possible.

Hello andreymi!

I have some questions:

  1. How long till a complete stable python integration?
  2. How long till a complete C integration?
  3. Are you making this in your spare time or is this made for professional work?

I’m asking because way to often integration of renderer’s stops because lacking interest or time from the developer. And some developers paused their development, waiting for the new render api. (Who knows when that will become reality?)
I’m also in the investigation phase of alternative renderers/3d-apps to integrate in my work flow. And Vray isn’t free…

I hope you understand why I’m asking.

/Stanley

Andreymi

let me bow in front of you.

terrific work to integrate VRay and via the script give us access
to this render engine.

I hope this will give me more chances to position Blender as a
serious tool in my field in contrast to Max.

You work is very much appreciated.

Claas

Rofo

where di you actually find that free version???

I do not see that anywhere …

I am curious if my VRay for Rhino would work with this as well.

Andreymi any idea???

@Roofoo: Vray free is a plugin version available for 3dsmax 5,6, and 7, that’s why all you see in it is dlls, and it won’t work since Andrey’s exporter depends on vray.exe to trigger the framebuffer, hence the use of the only semi-standalone renderer from Vray till now: vray for maya. There were plans to release a totally standalone version of Vray but I have seen no newer announcements since 2006. The demo version won’t expire, it doesn’t even use Vray’s License server. The only limitation is render size (600x450), so give the demo a try
@Cekuhnen: once you register at vray’s support site and log in, you’ll see a section called “vray free”. There you can download a free version of vray for max 5,6, and 7. Not sure about its limitations but they mention something here:
http://www.3d-palace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=736
About Vray 4 Rhino, if it has a vray executable it may work since you enroute the exporter to use it in the UI’s options.

As a final note, if you want to have access to a fully working copy of vray for maya you can subscribe to the beta program, sign the NDA and you’ll get a license, but you have to abide by the NDA’s terms. Andrey posted the email on the first page.

Second final note: Andrey already uploaded a big part of the documentation, so many of the dead links are now working.

regards,
Alvaro

mh

when I hit render I see the framebuffer open
the light map is being build but all I see
is at the end a black rendering and only
the light shape is visible after applying
the AA.

Something I do wrong here?

Thanks for the explanation, I think I’ll stick with Yafray and Indigo for now

mh

i hope they will have a exe at one point as a permanent product in addition to plug ins.

>>1. How long till a complete stable python integration?
I think I finish it at the end of summer. I’m doing my graduate work now, so I have not so much free time.

>>2. How long till a complete C integration?
Its not started yet. And I think I start in after render API creation.

>>3. Are you making this in your spare time or is this made for professional work?
I’m making it in my spare time for now.

>>And some developers paused their development, waiting for the new render api.
I’m planing to participate in render API develompent.

>>And Vray isn’t free…
Is it a problem?
I think open source world should work together with proprietary software.

cekuhnen
Send me your scene.

Thank you for your reply.

It’s great to hear that you are planning to help out with the API

And no… It’s not a problem that it’s proprietary software. The problem is that I want to be able to use the software I buy. But if development of the exporter suddenly stops halfway, I have a useless renderer that I lost my money on. I’m not saying it will happen with your development, but sometimes life happens.

I will follow this project. But for now, I have to turn down V-ray as an option.
I wish you best of luck!

Hi guys,

I decided to capture a quick “howto” on how to use the VrayMaya demo version with Bdancer’s script “vray for blender”, in case you wanna give it a ride. English/Spanish versions available.

Stuff required:
Exporter’s official site:
http://blender.lugr.ru/

Latest version of the script:
http://blender.lugr.ru/files/vrayExport_0.9.3.py

Testscene used in the tutorial:
http://upload.blenderbg.com/cornellbox.blend.7z

Vray’s official site (to create the account):
http://www.chaosgroup.com/

Videos:
English version:6 min 29 secs, 14 mb, windows media video:

Spanish version: 7 min 17 secs, 16mb, windows media video:
http://files.wildspad.com/afecelis/vray/vts/vray_blender_spa.wmv

Hope to create another VT soon explaining basic material creation, lighting options, etc, right now I’m driving Andrey crazy with my emails and questions, trying to learn as much as I can about Vray! http://www.chaosgroup.com/forums/vbulletin/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif

the script has an option to use V trough wine! awesome… :3

That’s useful with the demo, but you won’t require it with full versions since there are Linux builds that run natively.
But meanwhile the “wine” option to work with the demo is indeed great!

regards,
Alvaro

yeah, thats true.
now if only the demo would run in wine(error in the end of the installation progress).

>>now if only the demo would run in wine
It works perfectly in wine
