Apologies for getting you lost with these intempestive posts of mine. As filedescriptor pointed out above, I relayed a PR that’s just been submitted, and hasn’t been through the review process. That also wasn’t the first time. And that doesn’t constitute a fix. Given the thread title contained the word “fixed”, you’d be well within reason to interpret anything posted here as a fix, as in yea, it’s in Blender now. However this would constitute a misappreciation of this thread and it purpose, which I will state here and now : such as I envisioned it, it is to provide a counter to the other thread and its palpable atmosphere, a place where it’s encouraged to be gleeful about improvements to Blender, contributions that attempt to reduce friction in our work lives. It’s not meant to be your RSS feed, or the release notes. If a fix in its current form doesn’t land, it’ll land later in a different form. Basically, I created this for the vibes
That being said, I recognize that this fuzziness regarding the intent made it… possibly misleading… I think in the future, my best course of action (as someone who writes in here rather frequently) is to simply label things clearly. What would you think of that ?
That’s exactly the impression I’ve always had of this thread. I think the overly-analytical responses on the posts or the thread title are missing the point of it.
I have the feeling this is directed at me and not obsurveyor and I will reply accordingly.
Since this is your thread you can indeed do whatever you want with it, including changing the thread title so it now fits your narrative.
“It’s not meant to be your RSS feed, or the release notes”
Bit of a simplification of the value I saw in this thread but point taken.
“If a fix in its current form doesn’t land, it’ll land later in a different form.”
Not my experience. Many PR’s never go anywhere. Regardless of whether you think that is a good or a bad thing (I think its simply part of open source) its a simple fact.
If you wish to provide a counter to the other thread, this in my eyes, is actually a worthwhile distinction to make. I thought this thread was about appreciating what Blender is, not what it could potentially become.
That said, if I was interested in reading about Blender Development (which I am), where I am actually curious about PR’s being worked on, I would get it from elsewhere.
Clearly, you feel otherwise. Since this is your thread, according to your vision, you are free to weave the two together however you feel like.
Will this thread lose its value to me? Yes. So be it, I am just one person (with one opinion).
It could have a thread title of “Check this out” and still be relevant - the nature of this thread is in direct opposite to the other thread that has the angry thread title. Are y’all that are so vocal now here on this thread about the title over there in that thread demanding that the OP change that thread title to focus on the opportunity and not just negatives? No?
This is the first time I have seen so many come for the OP to change a thread title.
BOTH the titles where bad before (because they where both easily confused and just way to long) and I complained about that when, then this thread got renamed to something random clickbaity that didn’t reflect what the topic was about, and now it got changed to something else that it’s not about. Just be a grownup and pick a decent title.
Last comment before I go - if you start a thread, you can name it whatever. If you didn’t start a thread, you either read and engage as you want or skip it altogether.
Moderators can change thread titles if the OP is out of line for something. Other than that, we are just creating noise with no real benefit.
Maybe I was out of line. Maybe… I didn’t measure the consequences of my actions. I renamed this thread, carelessly, -joke turned routine, as if the ripples of that innocent prank wouldn’t shatter the world of my CGI peers, continents away… now I am become Suzanne, the destroyer of threads. And I have to live with that. For ever and ever.
Tariq worked on face center snapping ! most modeling tasks will benefit from this. Did Blender ever have face center snapping ? I have this strange mandela effect https://projects.blender.org/blender/blender/pulls/148297
It’s WIP
I am excited about all the new volume tools and all the custom solver and simulation stuff, because I already have access to it in Houdini - which is kinda weird. I guess I am excited that this becomes available to the Blender community.
These tools are EXTREMELY powerful in all sorts of ways.
I think many people have no clue HOW powerful this is and it’ll blow their mind when they see it in action.
I hope the BF doubles down on it and implements all the OpenVDB functionality and keeps on implementing more functionality that helps developing custom solvers and simulation tools.
My only little peek on openVDB (in Houdini) was years ago, a friend showed me what was possible modeling-wise, he had a sort of stone column asset which he eroded and broke using only VDB operators. That was neat. I have been impatiently waiting for them to land in Blender ever since. I know not all of them are in (booleans especially are absent iirc), but still, that’s a brand new playing field.
And its gigantic.
What makes it so interesting to me is even though I am working with volumes for ~3 years now, I still have no clue myself how deep the rabbithole goes.
I was/am laser-focused on Fire/Smoke/Explosion but this is just a (small) segment of the whole. I haven’t even attempted to do magical effects or motion graphics where this is huge too.
And there is the whole SDF rabbithole which is kind of similar but also different.
