As you see of the title this is my crazy workflow trying to get a Daz3d Figure into Blender 2.8 with the animation an textures. So if you have a interest in this subject please shear your toughts or tips. Is there a easier way to do this ?
Genesis 2, 3 and 8 is working fine with this method.
in 2.79 the khalibloo panel addon is easy to use with daz characters, it applies the rigify rig
Thank you , this is nice indeed, the only drawback is that you need a animations to apply. Mixamo have hundreds.
I had a semi-finished workflow on this… but it was some time ago so I can’t give you all the details.
Khalibloo panel works on old rigify and the new, but while I prefer the new it requires tweaking to work well. The legacy rigify has no problems (there are different addon versions from Khalibloo for the old and the new rigify)
then:
here is an excelent script which convert rigify to only its deform bones and baking the animations to it
then
after you have only the deform rig you can retarget mixamo animations to it or export to unreal and use any marketplace animations there. Now retargeting in Blender is dificult… makewalk works but requires setup… I heard that the paid addon autorig pro works better…
Then
you can use an addon for additive layers to modify the mixamo animation where needed…
I did try uploding models to mixamo, but usually i had problems with it nad tried to find a way to include rigify in the process so i can make my own animations and use mixamo as well… but i did not get to a point where i did anything usefull with my experimenting
I think Diffeomorphic (sp?) works well also. DAZ Importer
But I don’t know if it works with 2.8 yet.
Anyone knows if the khalibloo panel addon will be updated for 2.8?
Also from daz web site
“Cross Application Support
Use Daz 3D Models where you want
Daz Studio has built in file export capabilities. This means that all
_ of your Daz 3D content can easily be imported into other popular 3D _
software tools such as 3DS Max, Mudbox and Maya.
_Export formats include: _
_ • Autodesk FBX • COLLADA • OBJ • BVH • Universal 3D • _
Files can also be exported as Alembic, by purchasing the add-on Alembic Exporter for Daz Studio”
Anyone try any of the export formats from daz to import into blender?
Just wondering if this works better now than from the past.
FBX and COLLADA works fine. The best is to use a script called teleblender.

Thanks for the tip on version 3, it’s been awhile sense i used v2 with blender 6.x.
Thanks again.
Using the FBX method works okay if you do the animation in DAZ Studio. It works about the same in either Blender 2.79 or 2.8, except that 2.8 defaults to using the Principled shader. You have to fix any materials that use Alpha Channels though. https://youtu.be/g0haZU74UgA
Guys is it possible to go directly from daz3d to blender 2.8 with a rigged AND texture character? I want to pose and animate it inside Blender 2.8. If so, what is the best way to accomplish that? I’m new to this.
Yes – use this addon: DAZ Importer
Basic workflow is this…
- Install the script for Daz|Studio
- Install the Blender addon
- In D|S, create your character, add clothing, hair, materials, etc. Save the file as a scene.
- In the D|S scripts section, click the script then save the file with the same name as your scene file.
- In Blender, click the import Daz file button and navigate to your scene file (.DUF, not the .json file)
Note that you may have to setup file paths to your D|S files. View the Diffeomorphic docs for how to do that. - You can now add poses, morphs, expressions, other clothing items, etc. After that, you can convert the D|S rig to a Blender Rigify rig if you want.
Thanks, Ill try it out, seems promising!
But wait, step 1, which one is the script for DAZ? Where do I get it?
It’s in the addon package… I can’t remember where exactly, but I think there’s a directory in the zip file that contains the script… read the documentation from the author’s web page for installation.
Got it! Thank you!
Oh by the way, a little bit unrelated but what is the correct way to export a FBX from DAZ so it retains the pose and the texture in Blender? I would like to compare the result of the script vs a standard export
If I remember correctly it goes something like, create a short animation in Daz that starts with a default pose and ends in the pose you want, then export the FBX with animation. I’m not sure what setting you need on the Blender 2.80 side since I haven’t tried importing Daz characters with FBX in quite a while. The texture should come in fairly ok, but again, I haven’t tested it.
The Diffeomorphic plugin still requires some texture tweaking once you import a character, but it’s a little easier if you select the Principled shader option, especially the semi-transparent materials like the cornea.
DAZ Importer is working amazingly for Blender 2.8.
Now my issue is exporting the model from either daz3d or blender 2.8 for mixamo rigging. Mixamo cannot rig the model at all, no matter if it’s obj or fbx. Do you have any experience with that?
Sometimes it is really fast and useful to use mixamo to save time on posing.
I don’t have much experience with Mixamo. My guess would be that the rig has to match what comes out of Mixamo.
