74 Guns | Ship of the Line

This simply continues to be a very impressive project. You should be able to sell that model to some movie studio who would be very glad to have it. “The devil is in the details,” and you’ve done it.

Thank you! If any studio see’s it and wants it, I’m open to offers!

It’s been a long but interesting project so far. It uses so many of Blender’s features and functions.

I have completed the installation of the remaining yard mounted sails - the topgallants and boom. I feel I can just about push the stay-sails and I get the feeling it’ll complete the image of the ship if I include them, so I’m gonna try and work on them and the rest of the rigging over the weekend.

Stay-sails installed! They were a bit finicky to get in and ensured they fit. The hardest part now is making sure the cloth doesn’t pass through some of the ropes that are already in place. Collisions in some of them do the job but some sails are too close to each other to have collisions enabled for all of them.

The ship is fantastic.
You could definitely sell this on CGTrader, or Turbosquid once textured. That is where studios could look (or Artstation).

It would probably need texturing (this will be a beast to texture!)
For a model this detailed you will have to tile the textures a lot, if not the texture file would be huge!

Yeah, the plan is to potentially sell it on CGTrader and possibly Sketchfab. I also have a couple of other plans with it which I’ll divulge a little closer to ending.

With CGTrader and similar, I’m not too sure yet what to set the price-point at. Considering it’ll be a fully complete model; it’ll have three types of cannon plus carronade included which are all fully rigged; completed sails, operable gun ports; and the boats on the beams ~ all this textured, it’ll be difficult to come up with a reasonable price. I do think it’s fair to go into the higher brackets. It’s just working out how high.

Speaking of textures, you’re right, it’s gonna be an interesting one! I do have a plan of action for most of the parts and thankfully most of the main features are very similar - mostly painted wood. That should make the job easier. I feel the hardest part of this model is pretty much done with, touch wood.

You could sell this for 500 dollars and it still wouldn’t be enough for all the time you’ve put into it  that might be a little high, but don’t lowball yourself- this is insanely impressive and well worth paying for

Thank you! I was thinking around $450 - $500 myself. I was worried I would be over-doing it though!

I’m very happy you guys think it’s worth selling and that it’s a good project! It’s tough not to be critical of my own work and find fault.

I’ll post some updates during the week. Just doing some cleanup again…

I might release two versions- the full one, at $500, and one without all the details; take off the sails, rigging, etc, for 150-200?

Yeah, I was thinking of doing something like that. Have a raw version where modifiers have been applied and the complex rigging and armatures taken down. You would simply get a model of the ship as you see it then.

I’m trying to work out what to do with the cannon, I figure I would either sell them seperately or keep them without the rigging which would make $200 work. Removing the cannon completely, I’d be much happier selling it at the $150 mark.

I think selling the cannon on their own, for 50 or so, then a stripped down ship with modifiers applied, for 200, then the whole thing for 500, would be a perfectly reasonable way to go

I sell something like this for 280$, but it is totally static and has very optimized polycount.

You did amazing on all these details—great work!

I’ve practically completed the rigging at this point. There’s a couple of very minor lines that I may add but they might make animation complicated and they’re mostly behind the sails anyway, so I might just skip them. I wanted to drop this image here sans the sails cos I’m actually really happy with how this looks!

The brace-lines, sheet lines, tack lines, lifts, braces, and bowlines are all installed (though a couple of these are switched off cos they need the sails on to look right.)

The plan now is to go back to the stay-sails and finish up some of the rigging for them which shouldn’t take long. After that, it’s back to the small modelling jobs and finalising the overall master rig.

Rigging has pretty much concluded for the moment! Above is a render test, I’d say it was very successful! I need to add an additional layer so the yards can be moved a little and I also want them “shaking with the wind” a little as well, so that’s on my to-do list. That’ll all come during the final cleanup though.

I’m happy to be moving away from the sails / rigging for a while!

So, um, hi! This project was left a little on the wayside for a while cos I’ve started working. I’ve also spent a lot of the spare-time trying to model up a figurehead (successfully in the end, woo!)

I feel like I can safely say that the project is nearing its conclusion; the end is in site, and I’m tackling it every night at the moment!

Here’s a VP render for the moment (no sails).

Hoping the next major post now will be the complete and rendered version. Very excited :eyes:

The update from 4.0 to 4.1 did throw a spanner in the works. For some reason, the clamp-to constraint didn’t transfer over well and I used a lot of them, so I had to do a lot of cleaning up. Compromise was effectively applying the location where used and removing that section of the rig.

Materials are pretty much in place. The sails are the only WIP left on that front.

Some more cleanup needed with teh drivers (I need to redo the layers for the armatures cos of the rigging changes in Blender itself)

Lovely ship. Looking forward to seeing more details.

I have gone ahead and rebuilt the matrix. Last time I did this, there seemed to be confusion over what the levers and icons were all for. I’ll try to explain what’s happening.

The matrix (in this case) are grouped in two; red and green. Both of them perform an action in the same “location” on the ship. They are then seperated “fore and aft” (the space between in the middle of the levers in the matrix) using the ships climbing ladders as a reference point, and split again into larboard (portside) and starboard ~~ or left and right if you prefer.

If the levers are at 0 (to the left), the cannon is inside the ship and the port is closed. If the levers are at 0.5 (to the right), the cannon is run out and the port is open. The cannon and port each have their own seperate levers, cannon being assigned green and the port red.

The bow chasers and the roll meters are seperate entities, as are the property icons in the middle. These take the place of levers in the first matrix I did way back when.

I decided to keep this layout rather than using Custom Properties because it seemed easier to implement, change, and adjust down the line if needed. The original idea was to assign each port/gun to a group, which you could then animate. I figure it’d be eaiser to just let the animator do this or add it as an additional feature down the line.

For overall updates, I’m at last on the final cleanup phase! I now just need to clean up minor rigging issues, put her in a scene, and get some renders setup! I’m looking forward to this
