Blender Guru Competition: Photo Realism

.
It’s a nice render but the mountain shader are not good enough. They look like similar to jelly puddings. Otherwise the render is quite good.

Hi guys!

Here’s my entry for the Andrew’s “Photo Realism” competition.
I’ve no idea how photo realistic it is anymore, I’ve been staring at the scene way too long O_o - I’m glad to start something else now!

“American Diner”

Rendered in Cycles with 1300 Samples with slight colour correction and small firefly removal in post.

I’ll probably post up the scene to blendswap when the competition finishes to do my bit.

Good look to everyone involved and I’m looking forward to seeing what others come up with!

Jay

Edit: I modified the colour correction a bit as I wasn’t happy with it

Bloody hell! This is really fantastic! I love the details, like the fly on the windowsill…

That’s awesome! I, too, love the dead fly on the windowsill, and the condiments look exceptionally real

@Jay

Just lovely with the PF references, hehe, almost so I’d want to see Ringo & Yolanda in the reflections somewhere… ;D

Looks awesome !

hey, you should post renderings and not photos

Damn, if only others thought so out of this thread, I posted this in “Finished Projects” (not WIP) also as I do with most things I create in blender and all I get as usual is “you could have done this”, “you could have done that”, “that’s not realistic”, “my only criticism is this…”. CCs are of course welcome, but I wish if others were so good at doing this kind of render, then why don’t they enter the competition?

Most people love the fly though, but it’s just an image alpha on a plane - that took 5 minutes! The Heinz ketchup I spent several days on that and nobody noticed the detail sob! That’s my moan for the day lol!

My entry.

It’s really cool, and it’s beautiful, but the body looks like it’s made of copper, something about the reflection

Maybe they are just waiting for the final days of the competition to post their entry, or they are still working on it. There may be a lot of reasons. Only the Shadow knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men…

Well, as for me i have finished modelling my piece and i am having a hard time rendering it in BI.

Hear is my crack at it “blender internal” all post pro is done in blender compositor.

although not realistic.

Here is my entry Andrew. Good luck to everyone, and I hope this image shows what the standard Blender render is capable of (NOT made with Cycles)…

Out of date, see edited entry.

Here is a serious criteque in order to help you get the realism juices going again, im not looking to put you down only help improve.

One thing us 3d artists find hard to do is the “nothing is perfect rule” thats what holds us back from creating true realism in 3d, For example, the table you sat at in the diner, the streaks on the table left by the busboy when he washed the table with a cloth, paint is always imperfect and peels on corners quite a bit, the metal of the napkin holder is not a mirror but rather a shiny piece of folded steel, and you can see the different colored and toned streaks of steel in it, the bread bun needs creases where bumbs instesect on the bun, the glass with the milkshake could perhaps be portrayed as 3/4 full and you can see the streaks of milk running down the inside of the glass.
Like i mentioned its hard for us to see, because how close we are to our projects but the nothing is perfect rule applys to everything.

My submission for this contest and my first project using Cycles. Thanks to Andrew Price for organizing this one.
