Kraken Rum

Kraken Black Spiced Rum - A liquid of unparalleled darkness, stained by The Beast itself.

Test render to see if I could push Blender Cycles 4.0 closer to realistic as possible.

Quickly modelled the old fashioned style bottle and screw cap. Loaded in the glass model from another scene as its always great to be able to reuse assets where you can.

The label is just downloaded from the internet, nothing special there, and I create a paper material to add some texture. I reused part of the label for the screw top cap.

The ground plane is a simple dark material with a small amount of roughness just to catch the light and reflection. The background plane is set a good distance behind the bottles and has a spotlight pointed at it to create a nice glow behind the bottles.

For lighting a large area light to the left hand side and a bounce card to the right hand side.

Thanks! Been trying to make cycles look as realistic as possible.

It looks pretty photo realistic to me! (And great choice in drink :beers:)
With the embossing of KRAKEN on the bottle, is that modelled or just a normal map?

Great work! Would like to drink that rum

I was trying to figure out why this bottle doesnā€™t look like the bottle I have in front of me. The label on the 700ml bottles are different to the larger bottles. This must be one of the larger bottles. It looks much cleaner than the real thing.

I featured you on BlenderNation, have a great weekend!

The embossing is done on a second set of UVs and is actually a displacement map as that seems to keep the look of the glass as its more physical correct.

Thanks, its a nice drink and one I had in the cupboard!

I didnā€™t know you could get 1lt bottles, we just have the 700ml bottle. I see the 1lt bottle is actually a different shape.

Great details! The subtle bump on the glass, the embossing of the label, the soft edges of the Kraken logo in the glass, the ā€˜nubsā€™ on the bottle base, the look of cast glass on the tumbler vs cut glass of a higher-end tumbler, the bubble in the base of the tumbler, the slight chromatic aberration and bloom ā€¦ all great attention to details. Did you use any volume absorption on the glass and fluids? One detail I always look for in renders like this is the ā€œmeniscusā€ at the top surface of the fluid where the edges of the liquid will slightly climb up the wall of the glass container ā€¦

I really wish Blenderā€™s glass shader had dispersion ā€¦

Great work! I think it would definitely pass for an advert

Thanks for all the comments Joe! Its really nice to someone pick up on all the details.

For this setup I didnā€™t use any volume absorption on the glass or fluids, but I do always try to add in the Meniscus layer but Iā€™ve found itā€™s always really hard to see through most bottles and glasses, unless the camera is really close and at the correct angle.

There are a few shaders out there that can add dispersion and you can create your own in the materials too. The more physically correct can add a lot of render time, but you can add in subtle ones that donā€™t have a rendering hit and give a nice little colour change on angles.

Youā€™re on the featured row! :+1:

Thanks Julian, great to see people like my work!

Beautiful render! Didnā€™t realise it was based on a real brand 'till I looked it up. Though it might be something the Greyjoys from Game of Thrones drank

What a beautiful job. What I like the most is the reflections on the glass and I think the lighting is fantastic.
I would only dare to make one comment: If I were the owner of the brand I would like to read the name of the brand, Kraken, more easily. I know this is a nuisance, but for commercial use, I would try the light coming from the right.
I love this image.
