Ruine landscape final - 3D environments course

Hi there everyone,
Today I finally finished rendering my ruine landscape from Rob Tuytel’s 3D environments course (https://www.udemy.com/course/blender-environments).

I finished working on the scene several months ago, and have slowly been getting through the rendering, as it’s a very large scene it has to be done on the CPU as it overflows my RTX 3070’s 8gb of VRAM.

You can click here for the full quality render, or watch the extremely compressed version below:

The grass is from the first chapter of the same course, which I also posted on BA (Grass animation - 3D Environments course). For the trees, I used the same ones as the forest path scene (Forest path scene final - Blender 3D environments course), once again thank you to @Roberddd who helped me out with Mtree.

The leaves on the trees are done using geometry nodes, as is the grass which makes the animation easy.

The scene is made up of two planes, the main terrain which has the trees, ruine, water etc, and the distance plane. The main terrain uses the high quality assets, whereas the distance plane uses geometry nodes to instance the trees, to create a sense of depth.

I won’t go into that much detail about the grass, trees, and water, since that’s all explained in previous threads.

The main new parts are the plants, bushes and the ruine; the plants are done by using cubes, which are shaped into individual leaves. I then arranged them together and merged them, to create unique plants.

The ruine was originally made using a circle with reduced vertices, and a cube, which I then extruded to fit the shape of the blueprints that the instructor provided. I then used the remesh modifer to fix the bad topology, for the materials the instructor provided lots of photoscans. The ruine uses vertex paint to control where the plaster and bricks scatter.

The bushes where made using Mtree, with lower values than the trees to make them smaller. The leaves are done using the same way as the trees, using geometry nodes.

Lighting is done using a HDRI and a single sun light, which helps to increase the realism.

If you are interested in the more intricate details about how I made this scene, you can check out my WIP thread (Ruine landscape work in progress thread - 3D environments course) I have also started working on the next chapter of the course, you can read my WIP thread for that here (Forest farmhouse work in progress thread - 3D environments course)

Thank you for reading,

amazing work .
i like how the trees looks !

Thank you, they where made using the Mtree addon, which lets you generate the base shape of the trees. Its then a geometry nodes setup with a vertex paint for the scattering

Thank you for the kind words, yes I am currently working on another environment from the same course, here is a link to the WIP:

Great artwork! ^^ It looks very convincing!

I struggle a lot with environments, i think most of it is composition related (too many objects that i have to think of where to place  )

I also got this course on my wishlist ´til this day  would you say it´s worth the price?

Thank you for the kind words!

I most certainly think it is worth the price, and can see the improvement in all my works from when I started, and I haven’t even finished it yet.

I personally never pay full price for a Udemy course, since they are regularly doing discounts. I got this one for £14.99 from memory, and most certainly think it is worth more than that, so I would recommend waiting for a discount and then purchasing it.

Currently it looks like Udemy is doing a discount where it is £12.99, although it looks like the non-sale price has also gone down from when I purchased it.
